It’s been a couple years since I've been out west and typically we go out to the Nat'l Grassland in western SD but this year we decided to venture into WY. We drove out and were able to shoot during the afternoon and had some decent shooting on a few towns, but they were super skittish. Most shots ranged from 250-500+yards. We packed up as the evening approached and the skies to the west became cloudy. Not being from the area and never venturing into WY we had no idea how a bad the roads could get with a little rain. We spent the next morning trying to find passable roads and quickly realized it wasn't going to happen, especially with more rain in the forecast.
We cut our losses and headed back to familiar ground in SD. Unfortunately, all but one of the towns we once shot were empty. We spent a couple hours shooting and managed to knock a dozen or more down. With one day left and not knowing what to do with our poor luck we hit the road yet again. We managed to scratch together another full day of shooting on the grasslands in SD but we had lots of company with nearly every town having other shooters. The highlights of the trip included one town of monstrously big prairie dogs, seeing my dad send the last prairie dog of the trip skyward at 425 yards and watching prairie grouse on a lek.
