Receiver truing tools

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the receiver truing tools for Rem. 700's like the ones that are sold by Brownells, piloted reamers, taps, and facing cutter)? I know they will not match what a lathe can do but are they worth the money?

I have trued the M700 both with the Manson Reamer set from Brownell's and via the lathe.

The Manson set does a great job & is a little less nerve-wracking than the total lathe method.

You will have to decide whether to buy the .0010" oversize set or the standard 1 1/6" Rem factory set. Of course the 10 thou. over choice means all custom barrels afterwards.

The reamer set chases threads & cuts locking lug shoulders in action at same time - requires a lot of elbow torque. Face off receiver while still threaded to mandrel.

I ordered 10 thou.over set at first right from stock. The standard Rem.set was backordered for 45 days,??). Which one do most of us use??

Hope this helps.

Bill,

Thank you very much for your response, that's the information that I was looking for. Have you used the bolt face cutter as well?

Regards,
Tom

I saw others in NRA Gunsmithing course using the bolt face tool. My M700 bolt was OK so I have not used one yet. Screws in to receiver to register on center with bolt face. Looks like a good approach to me.

I ended up flaring firing pin hole on my son's M700, so I will try out the tool zsoon or send it off to GreTan.

Bill,

Thanks again Bill I appreciate the information. Have you ever used this tooling to true a post 64 Model 70 Winchester?

Regards,
Tom

I was referring to barrel and chambering work on the Panda's.

Why would I pay $1100 for an action & then blueprint it??????

so how does the accuracy of the truing work of Mason tools compared to lathe work? i'm eager to try the Manson tools since i don't have a lathe.

what about the bolt face & lugs truing? i see an article on Brownells that laps the lugs to the Manson tools trued receiver but didn't mention the bolt face.

thanks

I've never used any of the Manson or PT&G truing fixtures or cutting tools so I can't say how accurate they may be. There was a time when I was going to invest in that stuff until I asked about it on benchrest.com. Most of the responses I received were negative for 1 reason, DEFLECTION of the cutting tool, mainly for the threading tap. I decided to make my own Spider for my lathe and to do all my truing the proper way. Single point truing of the receiver face, lug abutments, and threads,no chasing them with a tap). Then single pointing the bolt lugs and face in another jig. I have since changed only one thing, and that is that I try to use Dave Kiff bolts if at all possible. I find them easier to deal with because theres no need to bush the bolt and they are available with whatever extractor you want, coned bolt, flutes, and a nice handle. If you asked most of the top smiths today how they do it, you would find that most single point everything.

I have the Manson .010" oversize set and ive done a half dozen actions and all shoot great. There will be many people that say that they are junk but its only an opinion.Same thing about chambering through the headstock and spider or useing a steady rest. Everyone does things different. Mike
