Rebating 308 cartridges for a AR-15

I am working on a future project to shoot a custom 308 from an AR-15 upper. Can someone tell me where I can have some 308 cartridges cut to the same base size of a PPC case? Do you think the case will be strong enough? I plan to use Lake City brass to do my initial load development, then I will probably use Lapua brass after that. I plan to have a barrel done without a gas port, my upper has a side charging handle and I have a DPMS single shot lower receiver. Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.

No problem rebating the rims to the ppc size- most make a form tool and cut the groove and base in one operation. Your issue may be with the gun itself. Feeding problems and the like. Theres a reason the AR10 and 308dpms size came about

He said single shot, no gas port, straight pull on an AR upper mounted on a single shot lower. Just saying.

Dave, is it possible to fit a AR-10 barrel extension in a AR-15 upper? Or what do you think is a safe pressure range for a AR-15 bolt and barrel extension is? As I stated this is a custom 308, I'm not interested in shooting past 600 yards nor am I looking to shoot HEAVY bullets.

where can I get the tool made to rebate the brass in one cut? I have access to a small lathe and I figure I can use a L.E.Wilson case trimmer holder in the lathe...

I beleive your going down a rabbit path that has already been run. Your looking at a lot of both work and expense for something experimental that has not been very successful for others. I would recomend that you consider using an AR-10 platform.
Just my 2 cen s worth.

They made 6BR AR15 uppers for a while ???? Pressure Problems ,Uppers started to come apart.
The barrel extension is to small to handle the job.

I originally thought of using a bolt gun but remembered I had the upper and lower sitting in the corner [been looking for something special to use them with] for about four or five years. A bolt gun would not be a problem, I can go back to that, I would only need to get the reamer and gauges made and the barrel.

No , I meant are you building the AR as a bolt gun .
Obviously not , have you checked into the remington R-15 bolt head for the 30 ar remington?

Just read other replays and agree , 6 pPC runs high but your into shoot once , call paramedics , if possible , pick up shrapnel.
The rem R-15 used a large barrel extension and bolt to fit it and a ar-15 modified bolt carrier .

Yes it is going to be an AR as a bolt gun, in whatever cartridge I end up using. I looked at the Olympic Arms WSSM upper as well as the Remington, I don't care for the look of the AR A3 uppers, I have no need for the forward assist or deflector. Also I don't like the idea of having to get out of position to charge or eject a round. I'm just saying....

I researched a similar idea for a 6.5 Credmore on a 308 receiver. One real problem that was pointed out is poor primary extraction force with the AR operating as a bolt action.

You may find the thread under my name on this forum. Laurie form England has tried this and commented on it in the thread.

Ron,

Search for "UK style side charging details". It was posted April 16th, 2015.
It may be of some help.

What does distance and bullet weight have to do with your safety? 6.5 Grendel is no slouch to 600 yds. and is doable ,
