Hello,
I've got an old Anschutz from the late 50s in the 54 action, it's a 22 Hornet and has had a very productive life on groundhogs around local farms. Problem is that it's reached the end of it's barrel life, the throat is gone, eroded and it's accuracy is no longer there.
I'd like to rebarrel it in 17 AI Hornet but I'm wondering about the barrel screw. The current set up has 2 action screws and the barrel has a fat part about 5 inches down with a dovetail cut in the bottom and a piece tapped into it that a screw attaches to from under the forearm.
Is it worth trying to preserve this, does it have any effects on accuracy?
The gun won't be a bench gun, more of a walking carry gun for hog shots out to 200yds tops.
