Reasonably Impressed

Let start out by saying I own rifles built in stiller, shilen, a defiance and a couple trued R700's. I traded a young gentleman a really nice M1A for a Savage 10 in 308 sitting in a MDT chassis with a Nikon P 308 scope. Even swap (I have 2 other M1A's that don't get shot much, thought the scoped bolt gun would see more use). Took it to the range today running my old across the course load- 155 Nos CC,46g Varget and CCI LR primer. Not expecting a lot settled in to shoot at 200yds from a rest. The adjustable carbine buttstock sucked and the fore end too narrow for the front bag. 5 Rd groups averaged .625 to .750! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Anyway stock barrel and accutrigger ignored time for some real load developement. Looking like the Savage guys were not wrong. Impressed!

I have a Savage 10 in 223 that came with a barrel so accurate I could not convince myself to buy a new premium barrel for it. That thing would just flat out shoot but only up to 69 grain bullets. I finally broke down and bought a Shilen for it and loaned the take off barrel to a buddy that wanted to play with it. After him shooting it for a few weeks he sent me an email with some of his 300 yard groups and said, "I can see why you it took you so long to take off this barrel." It would shoot 1 1/4" groups at 300.

Bought an early stainless 223 #10? sporter when they first came out.Put a 4.5-14 Simmons on it,spraybombed it and fed it the cheapest white box Winchester and handload TNT's.

It was always, day in day out 3/4" gun @100.Just a grab N go killing machine that wasn't the least bit impressive.Never put much load development into that gun.Last 5 years or so it's been hiding in the safe.Pulled it out awhile back figuring I'd run some very highly developed cast 55's through it and go kill some coke cans or sumthin?Nuthin hot, just 2000-2200 plinking stuff.First three at 100 was in the .1's,ten shot groups under an inch off bull bag.

Got 1/2 dz old Savages, most are grab N go killers. One 22-250 with cast and a factory brrl is particularly accurate.....5 shots,no foulers/sighters.Pull it out of the case, rip a group in the X,put it away. The brrl is done for an hr...and longer is better.
