reamers?

If you are going to supply the reamer for your gun smith, should it be a solid or removable pilot, pros cons)? What are they expecting? I just ordered one from Pacific tool but didn't specify. For $138.00 should I assume wildcat solid or removable for 284 Shahene? I'll call tomorrow to confirm. Thanks for any input Jim

Jim:

I'll bet that $138.00 PT&G reamer will be the piloted version. I'll bet you it want be $138.00 when you get the bill. I'll bet when you pay shipping, insurance and handling it will be $152.00 or there abouts. I get a couple reamers from Dave every month.

Unless you specify non piloted, it will be piloted for $138.00, but like Rustystud says, there will be shipping on top and in my case duty and VAT.

I spoke with Dave today, he said it would be the removable pilot. I also bought a go gage. He is a real nice guy. I thought that I read somewhere that one of the style reamers was likely to develop run out. Dave explained that I might have read where a solid reamer may have wore down a little and put scratches in the lands possibly creating play.
So what do I do with this reamer now? Let my smith hang on to it or sell it? Do people rent these? How may chambers will a good finish reamer cut? and are all reamers equal in quality of craftsman ship and material. I figure a cnc machine is loaded with a program.
I guess I should have asked some of these ?s before. I can pile on a load of questions and I appreciate your time. I feel like I'm gonna have a lathe in my future. Holly crap, think of how many questions I'll have then. Oh one more thing, I'm getting a .318 neck for .002 clearance on Lapua. Does other brass vary? I think a saw that Norma is thicker.

Ronin I'm bad for acronyms, what is vat and does duty = handling?

Thanks again Jim

holstil: It's your reamer, so if i were you, I would keep possession of it. If you are certain you will never have another chamber cut, you can advertise, on this web-site) and sell it for close to what it cost you. I presently have three Pacific reamers waiting for their "next assignement" when the present barrels are burned-out.

Jim,

A big question is what diameter pilot did you order with your reamer? Ideally, the pilot should be .0002" under bore size for a fit that has limited clearance.

Depending on the bbl maker, the bore diameter will vary. That is why gunsmiths have a selection of pilot bushings of increasing/decreasing diameters to customize the fit.

Your going down the rabbit hole here Alice and from it you may never return, especially if you get the lathe)!

Hey Bob, that's a good one. At this point my pilot is what ever they put on it to ship. Seriously I didn't know to ask and they didn't ask me. It sounds like I'll be buggin Dave again tomorrow, it'll give me a chance to test that good guy theory.
I hope my smith will have the various bushings.
I am building a magical gun that is going to break all the records in the world so I need to get this right. Then I'll sell some magic dust. and break even with what these damn guns are costing me.
