Reamer question

I`m in the market of geting a personal 6br norma reamer for my `smith to use when I rebarel or set back my CZ. what I don`t understand is do I need to find one with the right freebore or have it ground down to the .060 I`m looking for. The reamer he`s got now is a match rem br with a long freebore and a wide .275 neck, he did`nt want to modify it becuase other shooters like it. Should I just get a .272 nk. br norma reamer and have it customized to a .060 freebore?

The gun is "in line" right now and I don`t expect It being done till mid Jan. I`d like to have a new reamer for him to set back my bbl. Were`s a good place to get one?

Patchhound,

One of the most knowledgeable people you will find on the subject of reamers is Dave Kiff. Call him and he will walk you through each of your questions. Your choice for neck diameter and free bore will make the difference between a chamber suitable for your shooting and one that wasted a barrel and gunsmith's time.

What bullets do you want to shoot. An .80-90 Freebore will be more versatile.

.275 neck isn't WAY too big, but a .272 will allow you to shoot no-turn brass and factory ammo without any problem.

You might want to consult with a different smith who has the reamer you want...

The next bbl I get will be a 1:9 Krieger to shoot 87gr-95vld`s. I`m going to build a different gun to shoot 1000-f class so this one will be LR live varmit only, I don`t like to shoot match bullets but I think the 95`s could help me reach farther out.

My gunsmith`s shop is just 30 miles down the road so it`s really easy for me to get work done.

When I build my next gun I`de like to have my own reamer for it too so I need to learn a bit about what I need to do. Do you think it`s good to have your own reamer.

Patchhound:

There may be many answers to your question. You have the option of buying a custom reamer. You could have your reamer maker make you a reamer with a minimum throat. then have a throating reamer made. With the throating reamer you can make your throat to your own desired depth. Dave Kiff made me a piloted 22, 6mm, 6.5, 277,, 284, and .308 throating reamer. If memory serves me correct they were $69.00 each.

I too recomend you and/or your gunsmith Talk with Dave Kiff at Pt&G. He will give you as good of advice about throating and leads as one can get.

Thanks Rusty,

I`m going to look into that, I decided to get my old bbl rechambered with the same reamer so I can get started on my next project- my 1000yrd gun. I`m goin with the 7mm RMsaum, I can see a custom reamer in my near future. My `smith just showed me the new one he just got but it`s a sami and I don`t think it`s good for a precision rifle. I hope he don`t get butt hurt when I show him my custom one.

Patch hound:

Remember, You can have a reamer re-ground but you can't put the metal back. The same applies with your chamber. Dave Kiff regrinds reamers everyday.
