Reamer Pusher

For the guys that are using a pusher, after you prebore, are you doing anything special to start the reamer?

I’ve had my JGS floating holder rebuilt once and it’s starting to get pretty sloppy again. I’m thinking about trying a pusher.

My concern would be the reamer wanting to chatter before the pilot engages.

Thanks

The way I do it is, Push the reamer up in there with tailstock unlocked by pushing the back of it with my hand, Then with it still loose, Turn the hand wheel until it comes up on zero then lock the tailstock, Then reverse the hand wheel just slightly, I use a 10 inch long piece of 1/2 pvc to hold the pusher handle with my hand resting underneath so I can feel the amount of pressure the reamer is under.
Start the lathe and advance the hand wheel.

I have used a pusher for literally thousands of barrel over the last 40 years. 40 degree shoulders can be a problem if unsupported. For those there are two approaches. Cut about .100" deep on the body before roughing out the chamber. The other is bore about .500" deep to the shoulder diameter so the reamer is supported as it starts to ream.
I use core drills most of the time and the reamer is well into the hole. If I wasn't using them I would bore the shoulder diameter.
If a reamer wants to chatter a bushing in the barrel won't stop it.
