Reamer Delima

I have a PTG 223 reamer that has done north of 10 chambers and need attention. I'm asking for opinions on what to do. Should I send it back to PTG to be reground or to another reamer manufacturer to be reground. This reamer has been OK but I have not been real happy with some of the later PTG reamers I have received. Every opinion welcome

If it is not chipped, and still produces a good finish, keep using it. If treated gently, 10 is not a lot.

It has some small chips in the neck section and leaves the neck a little rough. The chips were caused most likely because only one flute cut taking the full load

Never had a reamer re-ground before- but if it has visible chips, sounds to me as though it would be out of spec if it were ground enough to remove them. More than just a sharpen/re-grind.

I'd call Dave Manson and ask him about it- might just be better off getting a new one from him.

Im well over 40 chambers with my 223 wylde ptg reamer and it still cuts beautifully. Maybe your going to fast, or pushing it to hard, not clearing out chips enough or something.
from what I understand that if you take care of your reamers 100 plus chambers is the norm before a re sharp

You are wasting time talking about it. Send it to JGS on Manson and they will tell you what you need.

A thought from someone totally without hands on experience:
Why not have it ground u'size to spec to make a die reamer to match a new one? That may save a few bux and no click on your chamber jobs and more paid work possibilities. Just a thought.
PS...I've read enough over the last several years abt PTG.....I'd prob go w Manson even if more $. Too many stories not to give me pause for thought.

I think TAJ45 has a great idea. I have reamers from JGS and Manson. Between the two when I order my next reamer I will have to flip a coin, they both make great reamers and are a pleasure to deal with.

Another two thumbs up for Dave Manson. When Dave sends me a reamer I have no doubt it will cut like a hot knife thru butter. He's my only go to and if he doesn't have it on hand I'll just wait for him to cut me one.
