realistic group size with a 22lr

ARIZONA_F_CLASS

FTR LR High Master, FTR MR Master, Smalbore Master
I have been shooting 22lr to improve my long range wind reading skills. I shot a 497-24x out of 500 @ 100 yards last week. Target was 1.5 10 ring and .60 X ring. What would be a realistic group size out to 150, 200 and maybe 300 yards?

Is 1 MOA unrealistic?

I went the same route last year. I don't know how far down the rabbit hole you went on ammo accuracy , but brother let me tell you it is deep lol! Take a washer 1.5 inches in diameter draw circle around it and see how many out of 20 you can put in it at 150 yds. The war will be on! But it's fun!

Arizona_F, no need to go further than 100 yards until you shoot cleans at 100 yards on a regular basis.
22lr is a good way to practice though.

Outdoors or indoors?

150 to 300 yds.........INDOOR.........seriously?

No, not 150 to 300 yards indoor. C'mon - gimme a break here. I meant to ask if the OP's data was recorded indoors or out (there are a number of 100 yard indoor ranges) so that any comparison drawn from the data included the indoor/outdoor variable. Sorry to confuse you; but it was fun. ::)

Thanks Erik,

I have only shot this rifle about 5 times. twice in smallbore f class matches. 1157 then a 1177 out of 200. I want to optimize this practice. Dropping 3 points wasn't good but it seemed a little easy to put up a good score and really didn't have to hold off or read the wind. That's why I want to go out further to make it harder and get more out of the mirage and wind reading to make a decent score. The great thing about shooting this rifle is the cost and the accuracy I am getting out of it. It's a cheap date. It likes the Wolf target match ammo. 5.20 a box beats the 308 any day. :)

I only shoot outdoors. I have a 500 yard range 10 minutes from my house. :)

In the RF BR matches I put on we shoot at 50 yds and 100 yds. At 100 we use an IBS 200 yd Hunter BR score target. We shoot 5 shots at each record bull for a total of 50 points. We only allow one X per bull. 20 mins time allowed.

On this target the 10 ring is 1". In nearly 2 years of trying, nobody has shot a 250 target. A 5X target has only been done once. In Sunday's match there were two 249s.

I also allow the 17's to shoot in their own class in our matches. Same basic results. No 250s ever shot. Regular 247s.

This is with some excellent windflags.

Shooting 1" at 100 yds consistently, day in day out, and having a specific circle to hit is impossible from what I have seen. I see groups under 1/2" regularly when scoring the matches. On the same target there will be another group that is 1.5" to 2".

There may have been targets where all the groups were under 1". But none have been centered in the 10 ring.

Annie 2013 when testing to see which IBS target to use [ 100 yd or 200 yd ? ]. The wind laid right down and I was able to get 5 off in one condition on the lower LH bull.

1.5 inches at 150 in the wind helped my long range more than anything . Oops never mind ,I might have to shoot against you in the nationals one day ;D

I actually learned more after the nationals and worlds. :( Something that my friends tried to teach me but it didn't sink in until after. Now that I know, I am going to practice it for a couple months with the 22. My hope is that if I can keep 1 MOA out to 200 and maybe 300 yards with a 22. I should really improve my High Power F Class skills.

Switching wind has always been my downfall. But now that I know the basics. I'm going out to 150 yards tomorrow. I'll post what happens.

On the plus side This Ruger 77/22 ( top ) is very accurate and found the ammo that it really likes in a very short time.
