reading primers for pressure ??

I know that with bolt actions flattened primers are a sign of over pressure, being new to reloading for AR's does the same hold true, espically with 308 AR's ??

No... they are rarely a sign of excess pressure - they are mostly a sign of headspace.

There are many signs of high pressure including; enlarged diameter of the brass near the base, hard bolt lift, ejector marks on the head of the brass, difficulty extracting, primer appearance and case head separation. All of these are symptoms that must be taken in context. The occurrence of any one of these is a danger sign.

Case head separation isn't caused by over pressure. May be accelerated by it though.

If you look in the manuals you will see data for the .308 and data for .308/7.62 Service Rifle loads which are lower. The main limiting problem is port pressure and dwell timing when loading for the AR type platform

Your problem is you have a over gassed AR type rifle that the bolt can be moving to the rear while pressure is still in the barrel and this may cause the primer to flatten more. This goes hand in hand with the longer military headspace settings and "YOUR" shoulder bump when you resize your cases.

Your loading practice is still the same, start low and work up watching for signs of pressure but the primers "may" be harder to read. The military crimped the primers for a reason and on an AR type rifle the primers may come out of the primer pocket further and flatten more as they are reseated when fired by the bolt face.

Many AR platforms have an adjustable gas block to be able to "tune" your rifles port pressures and the loads you are shooting.

Dear CatShooter

I understood your posting and decided to expand on it, I just want to remind you when you post it isn't like sending a telegram where you pay by the word. :o

I have two dyslexic typing fingers but I still try to make my posting understandable for everyone, but shorter than fguffiey's "War and Peace" postings.

Adding illustrations also helps people understand better because they are "imprinted" in the readers gray matter and stay there longer.

As you can see below now everyone now knows CatShooter abuses little kittens and is a cruel, mean (expletive deleted) accurate shooter. :D

P.S. Drink more coffee and exercise your fingers more good buddy. ;)

Edward... why is your prior post 18 pages of blank space?????????????????

Inquiring minds want to know ;)

CatShooter.

I saw this when I was writing my post so when I was done I closed Google Chrome and opened the Internet Explorer and it had the same problem.

So all I can say is this webpage may have a "headspace" software glitz.
