reaching the lands

I am loading for two model 7's a 7mm saum and a 7-08. Both have a magazine length of around 2.834.

With the 7-08 I can get within 25 thou of the lands with Sierra prohunters, but only 80 thou with noster ballistic tips 140g.

For the saum I can get to 50 thou with the ballistics tips and about 8- thou with 140g nosler accubonds

Hornady SST's are a looong way from the lands in both cases.

I am just wondering if there are any reasonable BC projectiles that would get me closer to the lands in these rifles.

I would like to be able to play wioth seating depth within the magazine length if possible.

I had wondered if Sierra gamekings or speer hot core BTSP's would be worth investigating? Are there other options in boat tails with greater than 0.4 BC?

the way the high bc's are gained is by the length of the ogive, so the oal is pushed out when you work to keep the base of the bullet out of the powder.

I have found the high bc's not to be worth it unless shooting beyond 400yd.
The Sierra gamekings are great deer/elk, as are the nosler partitions and they will stay in the oal you need.

Are you running out of neck to seat the bullets, or are you running short of magazine length? You probably have to stick with flat base bullets if running out of neck, and avoid the low drag long profile bullets if mag length is the issue. The Sierra 140 grain spitzer may be OK but comes a little short of 0.4. I see the Nosler Partition 140, 150 have a BC over .4.

mag length is the issue, and I understand that BC is proportional to pointyness, was just hoping I could find the closest thing to a compromise, and then hopefully it shoots.... When/if I rebarrel these rifles I will be looking to get short-throated reamers....

The cure is to send a dummy round (w/bullet seated to mag length)to your Smith and have him set your barrel back.
