re: Rem. 40X .244 threads - too nice not to share.

Looks like it made some noise when the threading insert hit that shoulder.

That's not a factory barrel, right? I would expect a little more stamping on a factory barrel.

This is a factory take-off. The chrome-moly bbl. was sanded/polished to remove the scuffed up area where 8" was glued into the stock.

It sure looks like a die was used but I can't imagine how a die could cut like that. The second thread is pretty well formed, but at a different height. I'm clueless.

As an aside, many bbls would "come-alive" when glued in. Just like block bedding.

Yup, not a thread to tell your Mom about.....but I’ve seen some ugly barrel threads.
However, as long as the pitch remained true and the thread is not interrupted or excessively oversized/undersized there’s a great chance you’ll not see the difference on the target. Provided the shoulder cut is square........I could tell ya a couple of stories but that might inspire some dubious behavior.

If it torques up and head spaces .....it torques up and headspaces.....she may be pretty on the outside, but on the inside??

This may be poor machining, sure doesn't look too good, but back in the many cobwebs of my mind I'm thinking that maybe I saw something like this in an engineering text describing self-locking threads. Could this be an older design self-locking thread?

If the barrel was threaded between centers (likely), the thread was nearly complete when the operator screwed up and hit the end of the thread. The dog slipped on the barrel a little and, when he went to make another pass, he split the thread. The tool was dull, the speed was too slow, and cutting oil may not have been used. Not pretty but it probably worked fine for years. WH
