Re-Chamber

I had a Remington 700 BDL 7-M/M Magnum. Chambered to 7-M/M Ultra Mag, It has sat in my gun safe for over a year while laid up. Decided to load some shells and shoot it for the upcoming Deer season. It will chamber a FL sized or new loaded case and bullet fine, But I have to tap the bolt handle with a rubber mallet to eject the loaded round. Any information what may be causing this appreciated. If it's not a simple fix, I will return it too the gun smith who did the work. Thanks Lou

Sounds like the chamber is tight somewhere, I'm guessing at the base. Paint a piece of brass with sharpie and chamber it. After ejecting it, you should be able to tell where the tight spot is.

Erick thanks for the reply. One other thing if I put an empty piece of new brass it will eject fine (NO BULLET)? But with a bullet I have to lightly tap the bolt handle to eject it. I haven't fired the rifle to see if it would eject the spent case? Thanks Lou

Then it might be tight at the neck. Or maybe it has a really short freebore and you are jamming the bullet into the rifling. DO NOT FIRE the rifle until you know exactly what's going on.

Erik hit it on the head. Tight neck or short throat. Ask your smith what the reamer specs are or cerrosafe cast the chamber. Let us know

Turn your necks and see if it helps. If using Remington brass, they can be horribly thicker on one side of the neck and very thin on the other. I have had similar instances and lop-sided necks with Remington brass were the culprits. Some of the cases were over 0.004" to 0.006" thicker on one side of the neck! Turned the necks and everything was fine.

If that's the problem, you should be able to see the difference with the naked eye on a new case. I remember being able to easily see it on my cases.

I also agree with others to make sure your brass trim length is within specs listed in reloading manuals. But if that was the problem, you should have noticed the same issue with an empty case. Still good idea to check it though.

Sounds like a chattered chamber. Got little flat spots gripping the brass. Happens a lot with conversions like that.

I used a bullet gauge to seat the bullet, then reduced it. With new brass and 140 grain Nosler ballistic tips it fired fine but the case would not eject from the chamber got the bolt open but the case remained. I used a brass ram rod to free the case. The primer on the case showed no signs of pressure, not flattened or cratered, still rounded with the firing pin indent. I used the minimum recommended load of Retumbo. It's going back to the gun smith. Thanks every one Lou
