Re-chamber a 223 to 22-250

I have a Savage Model 12 223 varmint weight It' has a 1-12 twist my question would a 22-250 chamber work with a 1-12 twist? and if so what would be a good bullet size to shoot. I very seldom shoot the rifle as a 223.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Yes a 22-250 shoots fine with a 1-12 twist. You will have the best luck with 40 to 55 grain bullets. You might be able to go heavier but don't count on it. Also remember that it will require a bolt head change.

Gonzos First of all thanks for the heads up. What is involved in a bolt head change Will I require a new bolt? Never attempted to do anything like this I figured I'd post it here rather go into it with my gunsmith that way I know exactly what to ask.

The bolt head swap is relatively simple. take your bolt apart, drive the pin out, and reinstall the new bolt head. There are videos on U-tube that show how. They are available from PT&G and sometimes from Midway. Have you ever thought of rechambering to a .223 Ackley Improved? No bolt switch and 150 to 200 FPS increase in speed over the standard .223.

Or have the gunsmith who re-chambers the barrel change it for you since he or she will have to headspace the rifle with the correct bolt head.
