Re-bore?

So i recently bought a rifle that the wifes grandfather built about 20 years ago. He was an extremely good gunsmith and world class bench rest shooter. The rifle is in great shape on the outside and everything looks as though he just built it. However it is currently a 6mm-06 improved and the back 8" of the bore its pretty well fire cracked via the bore scope. I normally would just throw on a new barrel myself (i was lucky enough to have him teach me) however it is a fluted Hart which was his brand and it is all fitted perfectly to the old fajen stock.

This past year he passed away and i was thinking maybe instead of spending $500 for a new fluted Hart i could have it rebored then chamber it into a 280 rcbs which was the last rifle i got to build with him. Ill do the smithing work so that is no big deal.

Was just wondering if i got it re-bored can i expect it to shoot as good as it did before? I know my work redoing the chamber will be good, just wondering about the bore quality. Pretty much all his rifles would shoot 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 on a good day or he was not happy.

This is a hunting rifle, set up for long range hunting\paper punching.

Can't say 100% with your's, but the barrels I had Jim Dubell @ Delta Gun Shop--(509) 684-5855 do for me shot better than they did...
Pulled a 16" 25/284 up to a plain .284 and it is a heck of a shooter on my XP-100 frame..

From what I have read, the Clearwater name keeps popping up. I still have to go test this barrel to see if it shoots at all, but I know it will need to be done in the very near future.

How long was the turn around time for you guys?

You can also try High Plains, a guy by the name of Norman Johnson. I had a shot out Shilen barrel for a Savage in 300 Win Mag and had it opened up for 340 Weatherby, and with a recrown by LPR Gunsmithing, shoots quarter inch groups at 100 yards.

I, too, endorse Jim. He has a barrel of mine as we speak. As far as how it will shoot, odds are in your favor but there are no guarantees. Every barrel maker has a few that don't measure up once in a while. That said I feel it is worth the small risk myself.
