Re#25 and 6x284

I was burning 51.5 of Re#22 in 30" Brux bbl 8" twist Hornady 105 BTHP produced an average MV 3350 with poor accuracy and pressure signs. . This time I switched to Re#25 and Berger 105 Hybrids seated out to touching lands. Fired 4 shot groups starting at 51.5 -53.0
1st group(51.5) shot well under 3/4MOA at a 100 and average MV of3375 Zero pressure signs
2nd group(52.0) shot a 1/4 MOA !!!!!! and average 3400 I was very happy. Zero pressure signs
3rd group (52.5) group opened up to 3/4 MOA and average velocity 3440 and slight flattening and cratering of primer.
4th group ( 53.0) produced an average MV of 3485 ranging from 3470-3525 but group was under 1/2 MOA . But had shinning Ejector marks which means stop and reduce load. .
So I'm back in the thumbs up camp for 6x284 . My new load will be 52grs of Re#25

RL-25 is a great powder >>BUT<< it is very, very dirty. I used to use it in my 300 R.U.M. and it gave excellent accuracy and velocity. However, Retumbo equaled everything that RL-25 did with the addition of being MUCH cleaner burning. If you get an opportunity, give Retumbo a try! You may find it even better!

It is slower burning but not by a whole lot. Start about at your 52.0gr load thaty you have with RL-25 and work up slowly from there. Once you reach ANY pressure signs, back off 0.75grs and make that your maximum. Then work below that, you will be fine..

A few years back when I had a 6-284.... I found N-560 to be a VERY clean burning, and gave VERY good accuracy with the heavier bullets. I won several 400yd matches with it. Just FIW. :)WD

Well I drove 120 miles round trip and bought a pound of Retumbo. It was either that are buy mail order and pay shipping and Has mat fee. So I'm starting at 51.5 and work up in .5 increments . We will see if any difference. BUT this powder has that "Extreme" label on it. If this powder produces, it'd be cool if I didn't have to adjust charge in winter.

I think you will find Retumbo to be an excellent powder for any "way- overbore" cartridge and it produces unusually high velocities too! My .300 RUM with 200 Accubonds goes 3225F.P.S. with 96.0grs. of Retumbo. I bet you will be pleasantly surprised!

ShootDots, have you tried this powder (Retumbo) in overbore 6mm cartridges yourself, and does it run cool? I've been using Reloader 19/22.
Especially interested in it's accuracy in overbore 6mm cases.

Thinking of trying it in my 6mm AI.

No Sir I have not.. The 6mm "Way-Overbores" are as bad or worse on barrel life than larger calibers. The expansion ratio is HORRIBLE for burning out barrels.. I have had some BIG mags before and the biggest I have now is my .300RUM. And I have a whopping 300 rounds on it and there is already a "decent amount" of fire-cracking...I doubt I will get over 800 rounds with that cartridge.. BUT it should last a LONG time as I never fire it anymore!

Ramshot Magnum worked well when I had one and burned cooler than other powders with heavy bullets

My findings as well. Nothing scientific but I could fire twice the number of rounds with Magnum as I could Retumbo before the barrel got hot. Charges were nearly identical.
