Re 19 in 338 win mag.

I have been using h4831sc with 225gr hornadys with great accuracy but less than steller speed(2650 fps), and have settled on a load with imr 4350 with the same bullets and it produces 2890 fps with good accuracy. I was told to try reloder 19 because it runs at a lower pressure and will have the same velocity. So i did a while back and it did shoot great out of the gun, i did not cronograph it so i dont know about the velocity so i am going to try again but looking in the manual it shows a max load of 78 grains. At 74 grains of h4831sc its compressed alot and i can hear the powder crunching. Will 78 grains of re19 even fit in a 338 win mag case. I have some on order so i dont have any to try but it seems a bit excessive. Thanks

I had alot better luck with IMR4350 also tried RL19 first and it didn't matter how much powder I used would not go over 2800fps. I am using 210 NP. getting 2950FPS out of a 24" barrel

Yes, 78gr will fit. It also produces velocity above 2900fps with Nosler 225gr Accubonds out of my 26" barreled Win Model 70 EW.
I settled on 76gr of RE19 @ 2890fps because it was the most accurate load. At 76gr, there is still a rattle when you shake a loaded round, but my shells are loaded to 3.390" to fit the mag.
RE19 is the fastest powder I have ever used in the 338, and a big bonus is that it also produces the smallest groups in my rifle, around .5 MoA is normal off a solid rest.
With 78gr, my rifle got 2977fps average over 5 shots.

Cheers.
:)

>>>My go to load is IMR4350. 73 grains in my rifle shoots 3 shots under 1 inch. first 2 shots almost touch. 3rd opens group up to 1 inch. this happens consistently. NO problem! Vel is 2,930. Shoots 225 partitions and hornady spire points to same point of impact. the 225 partition is a tremendous performer on elk !!!! this load will be too hot in other rifles.. be careful !!!!!

Even tho Alliant Reloading shows 78 gr of RL-19 as MAX with 225gr Speer BTSP, keep the following in mind....

Alliant shows 76 gr of RL-19 MAX for 200gr Speer SP, in F.C. brass.

Nosler shows 74 gr as Max for their 225gr bullets in Nosler Brass.

Lyman shows 73.7 gr MAX for 225gr Jecketed SP in Winchester Brass.

Speer shows 75 gr MAX for their 225gr bullets in Winchester brass.

You know what I'm trying to say... Start low and work up accordingly, be safe, and most importantly HAVE FUN !

Side note: According to Quickload prediction...

74 gr of RL-19 in the 338 winmag under a 225gr Hornady SP generates 61,650 psi, 2,850 fps (24"bbl), 3.340"coal.

Ramshot Hunter, Win-760 / H-414, RL-17, RL-19, Norma MRP & IMR-7828ssc are the top velocity powders for in the 338winmag shooting 225gr bullets.

Been Following this thread with great interest as I am trying to find a load for a 338wm and 264mw.

chronoed a couple of loads last weekend, Browning Xbolt, 26". Barnes brass(remington?), 9.5m primers, imr4359, 71.5gr behind a 225 tsx 2884 fps
Same components but with 74.0 of RL19 resulted in MV of 2754 which I thought was weak. Neither load had stellar accuracy. No pressure signs with either.

I have some 210 nosler Partititions to try, and once fired Hornady brass as well. Ideas?

curious about what Sherm's load was with the 210 NPs.

Mine is 72.5 of IMR4350, 215M Fed primer. I also worked up a load for my nephews 338 but had to use a CCI 250 primer everything thing else was the same. PLEASE start low and work up though.

Thank you so much for the info. Low and slow so no problem. Am hoping the barrel picks up some speed as well. Your load sounds reasonable compared to some claiming 3100 plus. As soon as i get a tight group i am done.
