rcbs scale re-furbishing/ rebuild

I have a RCBC 505 I got a few years ago that had a fww parts missing. Ohaus makes the scales for RCBS so I contacted them and was given an address to ship it to. They explained that they have a life time warranty andfixed/added missing parts and calibrated free of charge. I was amazed they had such great customer service. I only paid shipping one way and had my scale back within 2 wks. I think it was closer to 10 days if I remember correctly. That was a few years ago but may have same policy. Good luck.

There is a fellow around here named Scott (somebody will chime in with his full name) that fine-tunes and calibrates them for about $50. round trip and mine is accurate to a kernel or 2 of powder and repeats perfectly.
Just can never remember his name... suffer from CRS.

That would be Scott Parker in Bakersfield CA. If you do a search on scales here his handle will come up in several threads.

I have one of his tuned scales and I can even read a kernel of 8208.

There appear to be a few things wrong with it...

At this time it is zero'ed out balanced when there are 10 grains reading on the beam.

It does not return to the same zero if I nudge it gently to get the beam to swing up and down.

The knives (I think that is the right term, at least it is when discussing bigger scales with the scale folks around here)have some rust on them, the agates appear to be fine.

I know about removing the weights in the pan holder to zero it, but the other two problems, which might be related are what I am not too happy about.

oh and the micrometer poise needs to be cleaned up, as it is hard to read, but I am thinking some solvent of some sort maybe alcohol or mineral spirits on a cloth may fix that.

I e-mailed RCBS explaining what I have identified as problems with the scale, suggesting perhaps the balance arm assembly needs to be replaced and the scale calibrated.

Now to see what kind of response I get back.

Hi Bill. I tune beam scales. I can probably fix your scale. Please call me at 661 364 1199.

Thanks.
