RCBS Comp Seating Die problems

I have a problem when seating my rounds with the RCBS Dies and I am wondring if it is normal? If I set the die to the desirerd depth and the check there is a varation on the length. Is ths coming from the flex in the press?

Thanks Jon

If you are measuring the actual OAL, case base to bullet tip, you are must likely measuring the variation in bullets. If you are measuring off the ogive, I do not have a clue.

Sorry Jim,
Im going off of the Ogive with a stoney point tool.I think I have about a .002 to .003 Variation. Is this normal.I try to push down on the press handel the same but I just can't get that perfect.

Thanks Jon

check to see if you have any variation in the bullets before seating them. i have noticed, that some bullets have a slight variation from bullet to bullet, more so from box to box.

I do,I have found the Seirra Match Kings can have up to .014 variation from base to Ogive.I have called sierra on it and they said it was normal.I can check the same way to the bergers and they are right on the money.

Thanks Jon

Jon: I was running into the same problem with my RCBS comp seater die. Found out that the bullets were bottoming out in the seater stem. I was using Berger VLDs and the shape of the bullet was so sharp they they would try to seat off the tip.
I got a "Special Ordered" seater stem from RCBS and it is drilled deeper to match the bullets I sent them as a sample.
No more problems! The longest bullets I have won't bottom out anymore and I have some looong ones!
Cost maybe $25.00,$30.00. A real good investment. :thumb:

Im having this problem with the Sierra bullets only.I have used both the berger and the lapua's with no problem.

Sounds like you've answered your own question :)

Your Sierra's are not as uniform as the others. That doesn't necessarily mean that the Sierra's won't do the job for you, but if you're looking for the utmost consistancy in seating depth your choice is obvious. Given what you've already said I doubt if going to a different seating die will make any difference.

Ok,
thats what I thought.I would like to thank all of you guys who took the time to help me.This site is the best on the web.
