Ranger 22Target rifle

Ran across an old 22 and wondered if any one had any experience with one. Only thing it had on it was Ranger 22 long rifle, looks to be a Target rifle really heavy barrel and peep sights. Not some thing you would want to carry around very much. No serial numbers or model number that I could see:confused:

Ranger 22s were generally sold by Sears , but another 22 company came from Texas . I think the one you are talking about is the Stevens 416 . Check out photos of the 416 and see if it's the same . I have one heavy barrel ranger /Stevens 416 Currently shooting and it shoots great .

There's a Stevens 416 on Rimfirecentral now for sale . The Stevens do have a nicer finish and "X" barrel ? They bring almost double what the ranger sells for . At least that's what I see them advert for .

Barrel band is different and a few other I can't remember. Is the bore in good condition? Has it Been drilled and tapped for a scope ?

Was at a local gun show, bore was dirty so couldn't really tell much about it ,had bases on the barrel if you wanted to mount a scope they were original. Was just curious about this piece as I had never seen one before.

Ranger was Sears brand name , a lot were made by different manufacturers in many different styles .

That's true. I think a lot of different companies made different rifles for sears over the years. All I know is that my circa 1940 Ranger 22lr benchrest bolt rifle was made by Marlin for them
I've done a little research and believe this one to be the same as a Savage Model 19 -33 or third edition, made from 1930 to around 1940. Price was 335.00 wish I had picked it up:(

After doing a little more research I don't think my finding are correct looks closer to the Stevens 416 but with a barrel band and a little heavier and longer barrel wish I had bought the thing

Could you please send me a picture of your rifle ? Ggmac5@aol.com
I collect ( did collect ) Rangers and was not aware of any Heavy barreled peep sighted Marlin made Rangers . I have many variations of the Marlin m25 and m80 but no heavy barreled . Maybe I missed one ! It's possible as it seems even within a specific model the manufacturing used what ever was available.
Thanks Gary

B dale the rear sight is about the only thing similar to the savage 19-33 .
I use to set up the Rangers and Stevens 416 at my uncles gun shop(1970s) for the local Boy Scouts and school shooting teams . Brand new bolt bodies can still be had along with new stocks . The stocks for the 416 will fit a ranger but the barrel band and trig guard are a little dif

Sir I have one, shoots very well, bullets engrave the rifling as would a target chamber, I had the barrel shortened, I cut the stock some what like a 40x contour, has made a very good hunter, likes just about any ammo. I use rem subsonic hp for squirrels.

Sorry I didn't get back with pics Ggmac. Figure I'll just post them here for all to see since my model of rifle is the subject.

So I have probably murdered the collector value, if there is one, as I have made several modifications. But I don't care because I will never sell the rifle and it will stay in the family after I'm gone.
1) I shortened the barrel from 26" to 24" to make it more handy in a vehicle and gave it an 11 degree target crown.
2) I ground a custom trigger shoe to help the felt pull weight as it was originally very heavy and I could only get it down so light. The shoe really does make it feel like a lighter pull.
3) I added scout rifle mounts for using a LER handgun scope, which is what I had on it before the scope you see in the pictures.
4) Also drilled and tapped to add a one piece picatinny scope rail.
5) Added a butt pad for comfort on the shoulder. Might put the steel plate back on.
6) Refinished the stock, but it is due for another refinishing because she's getting a little worse for wear bouncing around in a truck hunting gophers.
7) Bedded the action with Devcon.
8) Ground the top of the ball on the bolt handle flat to help scope clearance.

Anyhow, it shoots like a dream. Here are the pics. The old 6-18×50mm Japanese Tasco target scope is what my grandfather used on it for competitions. Has no internal scope adjustments. Uses the rear scope ring for adjustment. Its a really cool looking scope, but its so big and obnoxious that it really isn't very fun to deal with. The target in the pic is the last time I zeroed it with my 2-7X LER handgun scope. Shot 3 shots at 100 yards to verify impact, the squares on the target are 1 inch. Haven't shot it with the new 4-16X scope that sits on it now.

Dang that's nice !nice job ! I use to use the old tascos too ! A little heavy but are pretty good .
I have a strong feeling that your ranger and. Stevens 416 will have parts that interchange.
They do shoot ! I don't know how to post pics but when I heal a little more , I'll get my shooter down and take some pics . I can email them .
Want to sell or trade that Tasco ?
Thank you for taking the time to take pics and post them.

Thanks. I don't plan on selling the Tasco. Be really hard to find another one. I have an original advertisement flyer that goes with the scope too. Rifle was made in 1940, but scope is from the late 60's to early 70's.

I found my 416 ranger , can't get to the shooter yet but I was able to get to this one . I'll take pics and send to your email if you could post them that will be great ! I'm off to the docs again . I found out gravity still works and I don't BOUNCE !
Pm if you will post the pics or just want to look at it .
Thanks , Gary

Just for fun to go with the old Japanese Tasco Target scope pics I posted...

How many of you have seen or remember this? It's a full kit. Just bought it for keeps sake.
