Range report and video: 6mm Super LR vs. 6.5mm Creedmoor

So a while back I built this 6mm Super LR, because I wanted a true "cheater gun." I've been fireforming the brass at a local monthly mid-range varmint match that I run, but have not really wrung it out in terms of load tuning or anything.

In fact, I didn't have any idea how it would do past the 500m line.

My shootin' buddy Chuck and I both happened to take a day off over the last holiday weekend, and we said what the heck, let's go shooting and bring the cameras....

So, we went to our range that we've got set up in the middle of nowhere and put my 6mm against his 6.5mm. I chose to shoot the "go-to" load in the 6mm, which is a 115gr DTAC with H4831SC in the crap Winchester cases. Velocity is about 3025 fps.

I used Shooter for Android for the DOPE, and even with me second-guessing it half the time things went well. In fact, Shooter is scary accurate when using the G7 models and absolute air pressure (I wear a barometer watch).

We agreed to only bring 3 rds to the line at each 100-yard interval, no additional shots. We stuck to that and didn't fool around.

Anyhow, I'm still editing the video, but I have the first part done, the 500-1000 yard segment.

I'll be working on the 1000-1700 segment and getting that out as soon as everything allows.

The final summary video will include the drop values used to connect at each range. This was all done within about a 2-hour time window, and the rifles were shot side by side, so the exercise is pretty reasonable.

Thanks Robert for making the cartridge accessible and easy to use, I hope you like the videos.

Both of you were doing very well. Great rifles and great shooting. Great video too! Looks like you had a lot of fun. Thanks for the show!

Robert - glad you liked it. I've been told I should try RE17 next, what do you think?

Tony - heck yeah. And you need to post on NV Shooters soon!

Part II is up! http://youtu.be/A8-I19XD9y4

Outstanding shooting to each of you. For the person shooting the 6.5, if he would have shot the 142's w/ higher BC do either of you think his rounds would have carried a little better beyond 1500 yds?

Thanks for sharing

Fascinating shooting! It rekindle my disire to built a rifle in 6mmSLR. Fact is, I have got the bullets, action, stock, optic, only thing missing is a 7.5 twist barrel. rcw3 might remember that I have corresponded with him for information. Anyway, till today, I still don't have a barrel :'(. Keep up the good work, guys!

It seems likely that larger may have done better, Chuck also has a 139gr load that we might do a rematch with. His 123's have always been dynamite to 1500 however, and so it's pretty clear that he had an off day.

I am impressed - - when you are shooting out at 1200 yds and beyond with short action cartridges like that, you really have to have things dialed in well and know what you are doing to hit the steel plates like that with any consistency (as they both did).

For a magazine fed round, I think the 6.5 Creedmoor is in best balance (considering its case capacity) with something like the Lapua 123 Scenar. You can run the 139 - 142's out of it, but it will labor more to push them and at a magazine OAL it will lose some case capacity too. It's one of those tradeoff situations, a bigger bullet slower or a smaller bullet faster. Chuck has things pretty well figured out there (he's an excellent shooter applying some solid brain work to what he's doing too - - impressive).

As far as I know Scotty was using 43.5 gr of H4831SC with a 115 DTAC.

Great videos - one of those "sit back and enjoy the show" events. Great work Scotty.

For the long range magazine fed work with the 139-140 6.5 bullets, we have recently been working with a cartridge we made up called the 260 Imp 30Ëšthat has been doing real well. In the last few days I posted a good bit of chrono results on the web page we have for it. Here's the link: http://www.6mmar.com/260_Imp_30_.php

Personally, I am still partial to the 6mm's and for long range work, the 6mm Super LR can obviously stay right there with the other standard 308 bolt face short action cartridges. The DTAC 115's are an excellent bullet and Berger Bullets has plans to bring forward some bigger 6mm high B.C. Hybrid bullets that will dovetail real well into this type of application.

Great fun, great shooting! Thanks!

Robert

Best video ever !!!!!!!. But, Skip would have wanted to shoot his 50 against
that 6mm. The 6mmSLR may well be the best all around cartridge for the
one gun guy. John

Perhaps there is hope for my 6.5 Swede ;-) the daddy of the .260 and Creedmoor. Great videos...Thanks for sharing.

I was doing some searching and this old thread popped up.

Just an update from 10 years ago. Scotty stepped back to get some kids raised. I have played with my SLRs, fat rats, and BRXs. I keep coming back to the SLRs. With the advent of RL26 it made that little SLR shoot a fer piece. I routinely compete with it out to 1K .. 1 and 2 minute steel matches. It'll spit a 115 out in the 3200fps range. The fellows let me win one now and again, so it's plenty accurate and consistent.

Scotty has been working with factory match ammo and his 6.5 RPR. He still borrows one of my SLRs for the longer range parts of our game.... We have a ball. He is now getting some more time and will possibly break out the reloading equipment... He is probably going to build another SLR...... and try to find a unicorn (RL26).

Good shooting. I shoot 1000-1200 with my 6.5 and 6mm CM.

What impressed me the most was how you could see the hits on the targets with your scopes.

If I crank up my Vortex GE past 40X I get so much mirage I cant see the targets hardly

What scopes are your guys using???

How time flies, I build my first 6 SLR after watching this on youtube back in the day and im still loving the SLRs. Have shot allot of paper, steel and electronic target comps with them to 1100y and even get to take a piece of wood home every now and then.

The SLR is my go to 600 yd. rifle for important matches. I have been running it since it's inception. I'm constantly amazed of how many accurate loads I have with a variety of bullets and powders. N-160 an H4831sc both produce small groups with heavy bullets.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd
