The wind was steady all day at 10 to 15mph
with gust to 19 mph, but the forecast said by
5 p.m. it would drop to <5 mph.

I began setting up around 4:30 and the wind
was better and the sun was perfect. No mirage
but the sun was getting very low.

I decided to warm up at
1800 yd and I saw my first splash, low and right.
Probably low because it was only 30 degrees.
It hit right and I believe the natural spin of the
bullet takes it right because I was shooting over
a ridge at 800 yd with no movement of cedar tree tops,
which are very good wind indicators.

I dialed it in and took two shots -- two SPLASHES
at the same spot at the point of aim.
Good to go at 1800 yd.

Now I have got to load the Gator and move 600 yds east
to my 2 K spot and set up again.
The perfect sunlight is disappearing very quickly.
Time is running out.

The setting sun is dropping like a rock. A shadow is
only a few feet from my 2,060 yd grass clump.
I get set and up dial in another 20 MOA and fire my first
shot hoping the same windage works.

I am waiting, waiting, waiting. I had all but given up when

FINALLY the ''''SPLASH'''' APPEARED.

It looked to be within 10 feet or less.

I dialed it in and took another shot but now my target
is in the shadow and it is too dark too see.

But I am elated. I was able to land my first 2 K shot close
enough to see the splash.

Next try, I will be setting up a 1,000 yd IBS paper target
and checking the group out 'yonder'.

I love this 284 thingy with the 180 Hybrids!!!!

Birddog Nice set up! You should set up a gong and a target, once you see the hit on the gong go for paper! my 2 cents.

Still boggles my mind that people can hit targets that far away. I love watching the long distance shooting videos on youtube.

Birddog, well done on all aspects. Your explanation of the events and your shooting skills blend very nicely. I can only lay claim to hitting a 10" steel gong at a measured mile sling/prone with 2 spotters on scopes. 6.5x284 w/JLK 140 gr. bullets. 3 second flight time, so I know of what you were feeling. The phrase of "if I have to explain, you wouldn't understand" really rings true when you "get out there".
Great job on the entire project, well done.

your shot shooting prone and sling is much more impressive than mine.
I think we need to hear that story.

Thanks

Awesome pics, articles and shooting skills. Birdog...wonder if I could ask which muzzle brake you selected as it really seems to be working.
Thanks much

Vias. And the recoil is not noticably more than my Dasher with DTAC's

Awesome. I would love to stretch my 284 out that far. Only been to 1000. Oh well at least I got to shoot that far.

Thanks much and please keep up the good work!

Birdog,
Not really much to tell. A fellow shooter and friend shot a 2x3' plate with a hunting grade 7mm Mag. at a mile so I thought to myself, if he can do it, so can I. My shooting partner and I always go to a range in Southern Ohio to verify zeros prior to the Nationals. We knew that range had a square plate at a mile when we were there the year before. When we arrived, it had been replaced with a 10" round plate bracketed by "U" shaped piece of re-bar 18" across to hold the plate . To any of you operators out there, those dimensions should be significant. Anyhow, I set up on the ground, told my buddy it was time and having already done the math on the elevation, all I needed was to dope it for the wind. very gentle breeze from 2 o'clock so I put 7 MOA rt. on. The 1st shot went on the rt. side of the disc, so I dialed back to 6 MOA rt. and turned it loose. When the "gong" sound got back to the firing line two other guys that were shooting from the benches said. "you hit the gong!!!" I just smiled and said "that was the idea". My partner and another friend that were on spotting scopes were whooping and carrying on like a couple of kids at Christmas, it was really a cool moment. After my reply to the two strangers my partner whispers in my ear, "nice shot but you really are and a$$hole". For you math guys that shot was .6612 MOA. A great rifle built by Kelbly's and 1 lucky shooter.

Sir, from the southern hemisphere, can I say that is one hot looking rifle. Those SG&Y stocks have unreal lines!

You know, I am getting some builds done that's been on the drawing board for a while but after that ....this 284 winchester thing is starting to grab my attention! ! I find myself getting into my berger book to get some data and stoping and gazing at the 284 page. ..I don't know, we will have to see ... 8) ;D

My grandfather, who did gunsmithing back in the 30's and 40's told me of a customer who brought his rifle in to have it checked out, as he was concerned that he may have stretched his barrel shooting a long distance! ;)

That, OP, is definitely "barrel stretching" distance you are shooting there. Thanks for the report.

Made a couple of pics a couple of days ago just
before sunset. The 284 had just plucked a bone
from the 1800 yard bone pile on the 9 th shot.

Terrapin range finder

I went back to the 1800 yard line and had a few white cow bones
that covered a spot about as big as a straw hat.
I had 9 rounds and it took two of them to get my zero.
Seven shots to make a hit.

Each shot was inches from the bones. I would dialed in
a click or two then next try I would hold off for it.

With two shots left I held at 5 o'clock and splash was
exactly where I held. So with the last shot I decided to
hold dead center.

I touched the last one off, waited about two seconds
and one bone rolled down the steep bank.

HIT!!!
