Random extraction issue with my Sako M995

I am having random extraction issue with my Sako M995 that was a 300 win mag and I had a smith re barrel it and make it 338 RUM. When it was a 300 win I never had this happen. I will put a case into the chamber and it will extract it and every now and then it will not until I cycle the bolt again and then it will grab the case and extracts it. It does not seem to matter if it is new brass or once fired brass and it will do it on fired and un fired cases at random. Do you think I need to put a new extractor kit in it or is there something else I can try like stretching the old springs out on the extractor and plunger I have now? I don’t have a lot of experience with sako extractors so I am looking for some guidance.

I would think the small increase in case head diameter from Standard Mgnum to Short Magnum has slightly changed the way the extractor grips in the case groove.

In trying to enter by hand an ermpty case in the bolt head , when the extractor has entered the groove, there must be a slight lenghtwise play not only to cope wih the rim thicknesses variations, but this also being a normal functional play.
If the clearance does not exist, the extractor will not always overide the rim.
Before doing anything else, maybe lightly file the inside rear kook face of the extraxor.
Play should not be more than .004'.

So you are saying since the 300 win mag rim is .532 and the and the 338 Remington Ultra Mag rim is .534 it might need to be opened up a little bit? I suppose I could give that a try.

Dakor,

I mean the rear face of the extractor, but this is easily checked when entering a case head under it in the bolt face recess. The extractor have to overide the rim ad enter the froove freely and allow a little clearance lenghtwise.

On certain dimension tables, the rim thickness is slightly more for the Short Magnums.

The rim thickness might not be the cause, but worth checking before atempting anything else.T
