A pal of mine got a call from a rancher we have been removing coyotes on since winter and said you guys need to come up as I have seen 3-5 at a time in my cattle & they are killing calves at every chance.
We hit it right a 5am and even though we had coyotes barking their morning yaps all around us we saw none, not a one was coming to calling at all. Standing up we see 2 coyotes sitting out in a crop circle 1034 yards behind us with not a worry at all. Knowing they heard our calling they said we aint going that way. My pal and I figured there was a den behind them along a drainage as thats where they finally got up after seeing us and walking then sitting, then laying down, moving 50 yards and just sticking to that area.
We move up a 2 track and just coming up the crest I stop to glass and see 2 in the cattle just dinking around at 750 yards or so. I coast back a bit, we hop it to a rock pile and go prone. I call using mice sounds and they finally bust our way after I crank it up and down. So what do they do, yup stop at 414 yards, sit looking towards us, walking around with no worry, then they both just lay down on top of each othet it looked like and stay there.....no even going to come in when.
My pal is shooting a 6.5x284 and I say Ill range you shoot since your 140g bullet will take them both.
I'm using my 6x6.8, 55g varmageddon load and wanted him to get them both...I could of shot though.
Bam...he shoots and they both fly up & flop like p-dogs...then 1 lickity splits for one of the many drainages red all over it, falling/running until he gets out of sight. It will expire in one of the gullies.
The large fat male stays where it flopped. 6am it is now and warming up, already pushing 60*.
We do 3 more sets and even though we can see coyotes past 900-1000 yards in the cattle they just are not coming to any sounds. They are not to be bothered by us...you know ignoring the top predators out there. Who do they think they are....hahahah
Standing up I see one behind us again at 900 yards plus just walking through some of the cattle going towards the nice green crop circles full of calves.
We figure it will cirlce around the truck which I know it can see from its position and figure it will cut around that and go towards the crop circle below the ranch.
We hold off for 20 min, then drive up the 2 track and sure enough a tiny spot of blond fur in the black at 1347 yards so we drive back and cut below it by 1/4 mile then park just south of it, hike over 300 yards to a hill crest above the cattle and being down wind we are good to go.
My pal goes off to my right side saying if it comes to any calling it will circle his way and if not it will be in my line of fire.
It fails to even recognize my sounds, so I pop up a red fox decoy I just happen to take this set out and I am moving it with my left arm making it seem like it got a mouse and it finally looks up from 613 yards out, meandering towards the fox.
At 214 yards it stops nicley broadside when it decides to stop walking, it was in no hurry during this time. Clear from the cattle I drop it with the 6x6.8, 55g varmageddon makes no exit.
We load it up with the other, stop at the ranch shop, rancher is happy.
Large female is in front, the male behind, 79* at 9am.
