Hi Folks,

Has anyone found using Ramshot Hunters needs a magnum primer.

I was working up through loads the other day:

257 Roberts
New, virgin Nosler brass straight from the box
100gr Speer Hot Cor
Magtech LRP
Ramshot Hunter (all within Speer's load data charge weights)

Occasionally, I got bad obduration and a dirt on to the case down to the base. Reckon worth trying a magnum primer?

Yes. Had loads that did this with H414....even in warm weather. Started using Remington 91/2M primers and it solved the problem.

I use Hunter a lot and in cases up to 54 grs and 180 class bullets.
Good targets and low SD's with BR2 primers. I'll say in your case.
the powder is too slow. Find a mid range powder like 4350 and R-16.

Thanks. Speer seem to like it as a powder choice. My question on a magnum primer was more to do with it being a ball powder.

I don’t know if you can get it where you are but there is a good article about Hunter in the 2022 Hodgdon reloading manual. The author tests, among other cartridges, the 257 Roberts and uses magnum primers in it.
If you’re not getting the results that you should be getting then I would give the magnum primers a try. If you were already at a maximum load then I might back off a grain and work back up accordingly.

I was told from the get go to use magnum primers with Hunter or Big Game powders. I’ve been testing Hunter in my .30-06 with 178 gr ELD-X’s. If I stick to 3 shot groups, I can get .85” groups, but take it to 5 shot groups and it opens up to 1.5” or more so far.

Years ago I tested magnum vs non-magnum primers (cci-br2 vs fed 215m) with 748 in 308win and W-760 in 7mm08, and the targets spoke for themselves.

With BR-2 primers some groups were good and other not so great while with 215m all groups were good.

And just for the record the only difference between 200’s and br2’s Is the br stamp on the primer other than that identical in every way

Using regular CCI's in my 257 Roberts AI with no problems.
Using it with 120gr Partitions.
Haven't run it over the chrono yet.

Does anyone know the difference between a ball and a spherical powder? Does “ball” mean any fine grain powder or is there more to it like composition for instance. Or are they one of the same? I’ve got some Big Game I was going to try in a application similar to the OP. Haven’t really messed with it yet.

Same thing, except I think Olin Corporation had a trademark on "ball" powder. Presumably that trademark passed to GD or Hodgdon.

In most instances, you’ll find that extruded powders are single-based powders (nitrocellulose), while most ball powders are double-based (nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine), also ball powders are more dense . Hope that helps

Vhitavouri 500 series of powders is a single base stick powder, that has Nitroglycerine added to boost energy. Info from Vhitavouri.

The 120gr Partition is actually boat tailed.

In my standard 257 Roberts i'm finding highest velocity with good accuracy using Hodgdon Hybrid 100V for the 100-115gr bullets.
From 22" Ruger 77 MKII.
100gr Nosler Ballistic Tips 3,187fps.
115gr Berger VLD, 2,996 fps.

Those loaded to +P, obviously.

You are not wrong maybe I worded that to vague I did say most in both instances because there has been a lot of new technology changes over the last few years and I can’t keep up with all the changes. I should have said some extruded are single base and most spherical are double base . Thanks for pointing that out. I do know most if not all Alliant extruded powders are double based they claim they have way less Nitro than ball powders but still considered double based. and Vhitavouri N series powders are double based. There may of course be others. I believe all the Hodgon extreme powders are single base and I use more of them than any other.
