Rain shield for scoring/plotting and rifle action. Who has them?

Does anyone sell a rain guard for your action? I have seen them for plotting and scoring but I do not recall who sells them. Can someone direct me to where I can find them. Thanks. Jim G

Jim,

I am making rain shields like the one I was using at MTC last weekend. I'll have some Sunday at the Midland match.

Weatherwriter makes the enclosed clipboards for use in the rain. They are not cheap. For an action cover, I cut a piece of clear plastic from a spiral bound presentation and made a slot for it to fit around my scope base. It attaches to my rifle with Velcro. It should work great but I've been lucky enough to not get to use it yet.

Sorry, no pictures at the moment.

Back in 2004(I think, CRS is strong this morning) Des Par was shooting the 2nd F Class Nats at ORSA and he had a thin piece of flexible hard plastic with a hole cut for the elevation turret over his rifle and ammo. It was about 18" wide and completely covered his action and ammo box. He just set it in his scope and got on about his business.

I'm guessing the Scots need to have solutions to dealing with rain.... Worked like a champ for him and I bet it cost him about $3 and added almost no weight to the rifle.

Ray,

i am thinking a rain shield for the action needs to be clear so that line officials can see if you have your ECI in place if there were a cease fire or hold. i recall we had to lift our rifle covers at the Worlds so that the ECI was exposed.

Hobby Lobby carries two grades of clear vinyl in their cloth goods department...a bolt of it is about a yard wide...dirt cheap. Pick up a piece for about $5 and some Velcro pieces at Wal-Mart; and make rain guards that attach to the front and rear of your rifle scope and with sides draging to the ground.

Danny,
You've been doing this long enough that I bet you have a picture of your rain cover in action. Do you think you could post a picture? I went with a smaller cover, but I'm not sure it will work when the rain starts falling sideways.

I'll try to get a picture up tonight of my cover and maybe I can get a critique of the design.

Thanks,

Ryan

I remember there is also a surface limitation, 1 sq/m, isn't it?

Sorry Ryan, but I don't have a pic. But, it's easy to do. The HL vinyl is 40 inches wide, and for my NightForce scopes, I use a 22 inch wide strip by 40 inches long...wide enough to allow an inch or so over lap on each end of the scope. After cutting the piece of vinyl, set up your rig on the ground with front/rear bags just as you normally shoot it. Put a small round piece of sticky-back Velcro (I use the fuzzy side out) atop the night-light cap and another out on top dead center of the scope if a Competition or NXS (if other, use a Velcro strip about 1/2-inch wide about the front shade). Next, drape the piece of vinyl over the top of the scope (no holes cut for knobs); and arrange the vinyl so that it just touches the ground OPPOSITE your trigger-finger hand, with front and back clearances on the scope. Place a small pieces of sticky-back Velcro under the vinyl to match/stick to each of the those stuck on the scope. The 2 feet or so of vinyl on the bolt side offers enough cover for my ammo box and score card (although I do use one of the small WeatherWriters occasionally under the vinyl, too). The idea is to keep water out of the action AND to have dry cartridges. I keep shamy clothes in my range bag to use under the vinyl cover to ensure that I have a dry hand handling the ammo.

Ryan,
Attached is a photo of the shield in use. 2011 Creedmoor Cup in Ireland. Note the weight of the shield would count against rifle weight.

Ryan,
Note the black Velcro strips on the left side of the rifle. Also have dots on scope shade and battery well on back of scope. I use a RBLP action and use both hands to load. Laying next to my left shoulder is a WeatherWriiter for score card and plot sheets. http://weatherwriterusa.com/home/shop/

There is definitely more than one way to skin a cat. I'm not sure if it is as effective, but it's certainly different. The forecast looks like I'll get to try this out on Sunday in St. Louis.
