R700 extractor hard to jump over rim

Have a NOS R700 in 223. The extractor requires excessive force to grab case head. I remember reading a fix for this but can't remember it or find the thread. Bought and set in back of safe. Can't not have a spare or two! Got it out and discovered you needed a rubber mallet to get bolt closed with a case in the chamber. Does a number on the edge of rim where in snaps over. Not a headspace or length issue. Brass scraping can be found in the bolt head recess. Seems it was to remove some metal from extractor but where. If any one remembers this problem and it's fix please let me know what it is.

I would start by checking concentricity of everything; bolt, chamber, counterbore, brass. Does the brass fit in the bolt face easily? Is the extractor free to float in the bolt head? Lube? Had one that the bolt was dropped causing a big burr on the bolt face.

Another thing to check is how loose or tight the extractor is in the bolt. Will it rotate fairly easily with a small screwdriver or is it tight in there? -Al

Walt, Al thanks. Popped in a bolt from another R700. Works fine. Orignal bolt extractor can be moved CW and CCW with a small screwdriver but not easily. Was lightly lubed so drowned it in oil and brushed it out. No help, no burrs. Hard to push down the part that actually grabs the rim. Removed ejector, no change.
Was expecting to see a complete flat face to the bolt. Noticed the face was flat equal to the diameter of the nose ID. There is a slight rise/lip on the face outside the flat part. Missed a machining step?
Popped the extractor out to clean behind it. With only a dozen or so rounds fired due to bolt closing difficulty, it was clean behind/below it. A brush had already removed the loose bits of brass. Reformed the extractor to match a new spare. But it back in and functions much better???

Give gre tan a call. I had the same problem. I think it was the extractor grove was not cut deep enough.

Had the same issue a while back with an XP action. I swapped extractors twice, that is the original and two more brand new ones. Tried everything recommended. Did as yours did, take a big chunk out of the rim, then fail to extract. NO it was not in backwards either.
Sako extractor installed was less than $10 more than the two new Remington extractors. Problem solved slick as a whistle now.
FYI first issue I ever had with one.

Frank, the slight raised area is what's giving you problems....good catch on finding it. :) Do you have a lathe or access to one? -Al
