R&R after another rough day...

Warm but really nice in the shade, warm is good with these old bones/joints. Chose the 5X45AI 11tw with the 39 grain Blitzkings. Two tonight showed themselves long enough, 240 and 290 yards. Had one at 405 but an electric fence ran dead center through the sight plane so I waited. Didn't something spook it and it bolted for it's hole without stopping. Afterwards I thought I should have aimed for the fence and I would have never hit it! The pup at 290 made it to a hole but got a nice blood trail. 30 now for a slow season start. Work keeps getting in the way...

Yeah, 90 + degrees through to the 4th here. Early beans are high, have to hunt the edges where the skeeters be. Wheat has been cut and beans drilled in those fields, so when they come up there will be some longer shots.

Wow - 290 on a pup - that's great shooting.

I was out on Friday - warm here in eastern PA but nice day considering no rain and no wind. In the field by 4:30 PM. Saw one to my extreme right at 191 - hole in field. Profile obscure a bit from height of alfalfa and angle not optimum. Took shot on crawler, missed high. He ran around then stopped on top of hole to have a look see - better profile - send another 55 Nosler from 223 Rem - hog down.;) Feeling lucky.;)

About thirty minutes later saw one at 210 along the treeline I'm watching in front of me. Crawler good profile - sent another 55 Nosler - hog down - medium size female. :) A few minutes later another guy peeps out of the tree line - pup. Range it at 217. Wait for broad side shot - send a 55 Nolser - hog down :) Feeling dangerous.

Field goes cold. Still time to check another field so about 7:00 I start to walk over to next field when I see a hog sitting on his hole to my extreme left. I back away, hike around to tree line so I'm positioned 225 yards directly facing where I last saw him but he went back into hole. Sat there waiting, about 10 minutes later he pop up, can only see from neck up. He's very wary. We play cat and mouse for the next 40 minutes. He pops up then disappear repeatedly - won't come out. I don't like taking this shot off my shooting stick but I'm burning day night and want to get to next field so the next time he pops up I take the shot - he disappears. Shot feels good. I walk over to hole - perfect shot in the neck. Hog down - large male. :) difficult shot for me :) feeling real dangerous.:rolleyes:

Finally make to the other field its about 8:00 but sun still up. As I walk toward the field I see one sitting on his hole facing me. Range it at 231 yards. Good profile - very capable shot with my Rem 700, 26" heavy Douglas match barrel. Even at 231 yards it my best profile of the day - full body visible. Take my time - send a 55 Nosler - he disappears into hole. I'm very confident that I nailed him - the shot felt so good. Went to hole - I missed!:( Feeling not so dangerous anymore.

At 72 I just don't have what I use to have even 5 years ago - getting old is a bitch but its better than the alternative.:p
