R-17 in the 220 Swift??

Anyone tried R-17 in their 220 Swift with either 50 or 52 gr bullets yet? Just curious to see what results you're getting with it.

Thanks in advance for any input. WD

Have always used RL15 in my Swift. Tried H414 but didn`t like accuracy compared to RL15. Wondering if RL17 is a little too slow. Will be watching answers to your question.

i've used RL17 in a 22-250 fast twist behind some heavy bullets

it has a very similar burn rate to IMR 4350. you're going to be cramming a lot of powder in that case

That is one powder I have not tried yet in my Swifts. I have some in my cabinet(not mine) that I may have to experiment with. Wonder what a good start charge may be? around 37.5 to be safe? May get some hyper velocities out of it.

While I haven't used Reloder 17 with 50s & 52s, I've tried it with the 55 gr V-Max. I didn't spend much time with it (just 2 loads) because I got MUCH better accuracy later that day with R 19. (To do list - IMR 4064, H380, R 15, and H414)

I'll be interested in seeing the feedback on 17 with 50s & 52s.

My guess would be that you'll probably get some awesome vol, but I have a hunch that it want out do IMR 4064, or RL15 as far as accuracy goes! I haven't seen anything do any better? Keep us informed!

I'm on my 3rd 220 Swift since approx 1977. The first 2 loved 4064, this one has about as much distaste for it as I do. My go to load in this one has always been 50gr Vmax or NBT's over 41-42gr of WW760 (which is the same as H414 as far as I can tell).

So, long story short, I tried working up a load for it with the R-17. Started at 38gr and worked up to 39.5gr with Seirra 52gr Matchkings. It shot a REALLY nice group at 39.5gr, there was obviously less pressure than the 760 load, very clean burning too. Definately potential with this powder in the Swift. Just need to find some time to dial in the seating depth, neck tension and primer combination that it likes. (And maybe a leeeetttllle more powder too). ;) WD

what were your velocities like with your different charges?
Thanks

Deadly swift..... Right or wrong, I normally don't go to the trouble of setting up the chrony until I've got the accuracy I want. When I get time to get back to it, I'll post up what I get.

Superlight.... IMHO H-380=H414=ww760. Where one works the others do too, or at least that has been my experience with them. WD
