R-15--223

Any one ever had a proplem with the rem R-15 not shooting well? I was breaking the barrell in after I bought it The first 15 shots i cleaned it after one shot then 15 thru 50 it was 3 shots. It shot like a champion under a inch at a 100. These were shot with 52 grain bergers match BTHP. On about the 40 shot it was shooting so well i tried a 70 grain bullet at 300 yards. The one in 9 twist i though would be perfect for this gun as well as it is shooting!!It was about 3.5 inches @ 300. Oh well i thought it jst needed a little tweaking. The R-15 all broke in is siting in the corner for a few weeks and i decided to get her out for some coyotes instead of carrying my tack driver 22-250 Ackley at 14 lbs.I load up the 52 grain Bergers that shot so good and i am luckey to hit the target! The group was about 4 inches and awful! What have i done wrong i went back over all my notes and loaded some more and went back to the range . Same sad story.I was just wondering what you guys think mite of happened?? I think some thing happened to the barrell because i tried some different powders and bullets and could not get it to shoot the same two times in a row?? Does any one make a stainless barrell for a R-15?????

loose scope....
bad scope
shoot some quality factory ammo to obtain an accuracy "std" for the rifle...
take your loads out of the equation.

Check Your Scope, Rings, bases, action screws.... First. that just happened to me this summer. Dang Bases loosened up. About drove me nuts.... Err more nuts!!!!

Holiday cheers,

I clean it with a cleaning rod holder from the rear and i don't let the brush go out and back and touch the crown..I just checked the scope. It is a older VX lll 4.5 14 and is clear as a bell.Leupold used to put good glass in them! The rear locking ring on the rear adj was lose and let the eye piece move a little??Back to the range!Does any body make a good stainless barrell for this gun??I will keep you informed thanks!

what was the temp on day one, what was ther temp on this last outing?
what powder?
how old of a scope....the ar's have a double recoil and lots of early scopes cannot handle the second part...
i lost a redfield target scope this way.
shake it...any noise ??

There are some good SS barrels, probably all on backorder now. The R15 should be able to use any mil-spec AR barrel if you have the tools to change it. What is stamped on the barrel between the gas port and muzzle? 5.56 1:9 DPMS?

SS barrels are plentiful for any AR. I'm surprised that it will shoot 70 gr bullets, usually need 1-8 or 1-7 twist. You didn't shoot out a barrel, there is something else going on and very likely could be scope adjustments moving on every shot.

1/9 will handle 70's quite well and some 75's. it is a bullet lenght thing. the plastic tipped bullets will probably not work as they get too long.
a 1/8 will get you out to 80 gr ...bu tthose are single loaded and an caol of about 2.450 or so...

Lets go back a minute, describe exactly your process for cleaning like what chemicals you are using, and how many strokes per outing you are using for how many bullets you use at a time. Can you get it bore scoped after you clean it.I have had plenty of ar's and even with my rigorous cleaning,I borescoped 1 barrel that was made by armalite. My best factory barrel. When I scoped it after cleaning I discovered it was a copper mine.I had to change chemicals and even had to use Iosso cleaning paste to get all the heavy copper out.Accuracy was then restored.Montana extreme 50 bmg formula works wellbut they call it copper cleaner now.It has ammonia in it and it will wake you up.My feeling is you have a coppered up barrel whether you want to believe it or not.Using the Iosso will leave patches looking dirty black even in a clean barrel. So dont over do it.Read the instructions.
