quickload data for 6BR

hey guys got a quick question for you all
my mate has quick load and he did up a load for my 6BR with berger 105gr hunting vlds bullets
now i gave him all my data etc and he come out with 31.4gr of RL15 from it at .020 off the lands

now i'm thinking this is a bit high as when i was doing my own load testing on my 6BR when i had new brass and new barrel i was getting pressure at 30.2gr with RL15 but i was using 105gr hunting vlds at .010 jam , getting cratering, extractor mark and hard bolt lift

is this saying something is wrong with my gun or are the figures wrong??..
yes he did use target vlds instead of hunting vlds but that wouldn't make much difference

bit more info... i found a load of 29.5gr of RL15 at .020 off the lands the old fashion way which i finally got to test through a chrony and it came out as - avg speed of 2770 fps over 6 loads through a magnetospeed min was 2759/max 2787 ES 9.8 , this load was giving me .2 at 100m
now i was quite surprised how slow my loads were as people go on about 2850fps or so being a good node around there or should i not be worries about it and just keep shooting as is ?

cheers
pethy

I would trust your gun before a computer program. Dare I say 31.4gr is probably going to start ruining cases. Load up a low charge and work up in 0.2gr and look for pressure signs. Possibly you wont do any damage at that charge, possibly you may end up in hospital. Why risk it without doing the hard work?

yeah i just wanted to see if i was close to this quickload as i see alot of people lately are using it , might load a few up again from 30gr in .2 increments and see if i can go higher ?? time will tell :o

Lots of folks use QuickLoad, but the designers themselves make it perfectly clear that the program will give results without any guarantee of usability. There's some factors that the program cannot and does not account for, and these can quickly become an issue if enough of them line up on the wrong side of the tolerance stack. Great program, and I use it extensively. It points the way, but it doesn't necessarily deliver you at the final destination if you see what I mean.

Still have to rely on empirical results of testing in your rifle.

You need to adjust a few variables to achieve accurate results in QL. Case capacity, trim length, barrel length, bullet length, bullet weight, powder temp, and burning rate can all make a difference.

Always start low until you have confirmed the burning rate of a particular lot of powder in that particular cartridge. The instructions that come with QL are fairly informative and should be read.

yeah did all that and gave to him and that is what he came out with ?? i dont think i will get (31.4gr) that high hey . made up some more loads today and will running them through the magnetospeed .2gr at a time till i see pressure , starting at 30gr as i know that is safe

I have been reloading since 1967, how did we ever get by with limited load data without the internet?

is this saying something is wrong with my gun or are the figures wrong??..

One tried and true method is COMMON Sense. Chambers and pressures vary with different reamers, brass, elevation, etc.
No computer program can replicate your exact parameters, they are close, but not exact. It's just a tool for safe guidelines
to experiment/predict variables with load developement.

For example, his R-15 is a different lot than yours. Just trying to help.

my 2cents..

Times change and with advent of computers we now get 30 miles to the gallon instead of 12 mpg. We have to adapt to more modern concepts if we want to keep up it seems these days. I do it the old fashion way myself regardless. But you cant knock it till you try it.

yeah i was only going to try it as i dont have the time atm to work up a new load the old fashion way
thought id try and see what this quickload was all about and hopefully save time and some barrel life

oh well

My QL says 37.8 gr of water not 38.8 your a full gr over on powder. Larry

cheers i will check again with for case capacity, but im sure i got 38.8gr water but i could be wrong haha

I use quickload for load estimates all the time, but still use common sense.
I use my GPS but if told me to make a right turn off a bridge, I probably wouldnt

With a 30" barrel, I believe that your best accuracy is going to be around 3050 fps. YMMV.

As I believe someone has already mentioned, QL is not a comprehensive compendium of all possible permutations of loads for any given cartridge. It is also not a tool for beginners to use as a substitute for manufacturer's data and handloading experience. This caveat appears in several places on several screens in the course of working up a load using QL. The QL (Neco?) folks have no clue as to what primer you may use--nor can they predict how you have formed your brass or how you may have headspaced your chamber that you use to form your brass. These little things can make big differences.

As an example:

When I first began to shoot the 30BR, I looked on this site for load data and found what must be good data, since it was posted by people who could not only be considered experts in the field, but pioneers and developers of the cartridge. Still, being the skeptic I am, I double checked their data with my QL program. The data agreed closely enough for me to believe it all. However, when I tried to pour H4198 into my newly made 30BR cases, I could not get within 2 grains of the expert and QL loads. Not even by the use of my super secret never fail double drop tube technique was I able to do it.. My rifle shot some nice groups but not consistently nice ones.

It turned out that because I was indexing my chamber and dies on the 30R go gauge, I was making a slightly shorter case than other people were making. Fooling with seating depth on QL gave me a clue. I started over using the NO go gage as my index and all was corrected.----------so none of this could have been predicted by using QL alone ---it has limits--but it will point the way to solutions for problems if you know what to look for and how to interpret the data you glean from all this. It's a great tool, but not a stand alone magic bullet for all (pun intended) problems and questions. I had a similar experience with the 22BR, but my 6BR indexed on the short end of the scale has be great, I'm not sure that a 30" barrel is ever going to be a winner in 6BR.

BTW, QL does not give you data with reference to how far off the lands you are. It gives you data with reference as to how far into the case your bullet is seated, which is not the same thing. (see above)
