Looks great! Looks like a very nice little lathe for barrel work. I like your ball bearing setup for your little 4 jaw collet. Should make for a nice stress free way to hold the barrel. Well done.

Love that. I don't know anything about CNC machines but I've always eyeballed the 8L thinking it's a really handy size/configuration for barrels.

Thanks. The 8L is a great little lathe. I like that I can run short barrels through the head stock and so far they hold great tolerances. I have 2 of them. The other is set up with a pneumatic collet closer with a solenoid along with a bar puller so I can run a loop cycle for multiple parts.

What is the longest barrel you think you could work on in the 8L before it requires a add on rear spider or something to support and dial in the rear?
Tormach is about 2 miles from me so it peaks my interest more.

I have added a rear spider to the factory draw tube. The longest barrel I’ve done is 26 inches and it didn’t show any signs of movement after turning.
I know Tormach gets a lot of hate and they do have some drawbacks but for their price they are hard to beat. They are also great to work with and customer service is top notch.
If you go visit talk to Davie, he’s their pre sales lead and is so knowledgeable about all their product. Tell him the 8L guy from Iowa set you :)

Thanks, it’s a solid little lathe. This is probably something you would do on your mill :)

Good threading.
However, are you sure the ID of the muzzle runs anywhere near true with the OD.?
And you showed indicating the barrel right at the edge of the tenon. What about up in there?

Or maybe I missed a step.

I use an indicator rod to dial in muzzle. I'm always a bit humored by the runout on the barrel at times.
