Quick question on neck sizing

How much lenght of the neck should be resized ive been sizing about 70 percent. Is 70 a good place to be? Im shooting 80 grn bergers and into the lands Id say 5 to 10 percent of the bullet is in the case below the neck. Im sizing .0001 smaller thn the neck mesurment of my loaded round. a neck with a seated bullet measures .272 so im using a .271 bushing so sense the whole neck is being used should I be sizing the whole neck?

Some, probably most, people size the whole neck. If you aren't seating the bullet into the lands then I believe this to be best. When not seating into the lands full neck contact seems to be critical for a consistent powder burn.

Two things might support NOT sizing the whole neck. First is when seating the bullet below the neck shoulder junction having then neck partially sized is supposed to help avoid the dreaded donut. The other is that the unsized portion of the neck is supposed to help align the cartridge in the chamber .

Partial neck sizing does help align the bullet with the bore. LE Wilson sizer dies are designed to size about 70% of the neck, cause that has been determined to be ultimate for good accuracy.

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but my Redding Competition Neck collet dies will not fully size the neck. They always end up with about .010" not sized -in all three calibers I have using a Forster Co-Ax press.

I prefer as much neck contact as I can get so I'll resize just at 100% of the neck.
Check out the "Forster Bushing Bump Dies". They have a pretty good description of how the bushing dies work. Not sure I agree 100% but I figure they've been at a little longer than I have. ;)

George, The Redding match/comp. dies F/L and neck sizing will not quite size all the way to the neck/shoulder junction. Designed that way I suppose. I have heard others mention this and mine is just like yours. Bill

the Wilson bushings have the bevel only on one side just flip them over and use the flat bottom the work better

You really only need to size the neck enough that the bullets base, pressure ring) is within the sized portion of the neck. Other than that it's pretty simple.
