Questions for the Steyr guru's

Purchased a Styer Mannlicker SL in 223 today and can't find much info on what I bought. The stock is really nice walnut with stippling on the grip and fore-end with 7 vents on each side. It has set triggers and a gloss finish on the barreled action. Looks to be a heavy barrel. All I seem to find are the Styers with the full stock. This one seems to be a varmint model. Searched several places on the web with no luck on this rifle. Can anyone direct me where to go or know which rifle I have. Mainly trying to find out if I got a deal or not. Thanks-pyscodog

Re: Questions for the Styer guru's

I wouldn't call myself a 'Steyr guru', but here's the company's Austrian website:

http://www.steyr-mannlicher.com/

The nearest modern equivalent to the old timber half-stocked SL (Sport Lux?) is the 'Classic' I think - most current Steyr-Mannlichers have synthetic stocks. The timber and other fancier models were always well made and beautifully finished and you're lucky to have got the optional double set triggers as this was an expensive addition.

Incidentally, the barrel is an incredibly tight friction / push-fit in the receiver that involved heating the receiver up to expand it before fitting the barrel, so you cannot rebarrel it easily - a return to the factory job, or the old barrel sawn off leaving a stub to be threaded to accept a new barrel. So, I hope you're happy with the calibre! What about when the barrel wears out? They're incredibly hard hammer forged and so they last nearly for ever!

Hi pyscodog,

I think you have an older version of Steyr's Pro Varmint offering.
Does yours come with scope rings?
The mounting system I have on mine is the current EAW swingmounts($$$$).
I own two Stutzen(fullstock, mid '80s) Steyrs with set triggers, one in .223 (SL=Super Leicht) and one in .308 Win (L=Leicht). They are sweet.

I contacted the Steyr company a while back for the twist rate of the .223, they told me 1:9. Good for up to 70 gr. bullets. Shoots cloverleaves so easily I think I might have irish in me!!

I am including 2 scans from the '89 Frankonia Jagd catalogue in which they displayed their offerings:

Don't fret about the prices, the Frankonia catalogue was directed to german customers.

Please post pictures. Steyrs are what I consider works of art to be shown and used.

Cheers,

Phil aka tazzman

tazzman- Mine resembles the rifle in the 2nd picture #3. I agree, they are works of art. Mine has some fantastic wood. A friend has a gun book and thinks he found it and its the Super Leicht. As to mounts, yes it had mounts with a Zeiss attached to them. As soon as I figure how to post pics here, I'll post a few. Maybe with targets!! Thanks for the help guys!

It could be a "Jagdmatch" with muzzle diameter 17mm (and iron sight) or a special US version with a thicker barrel.

Tip: remove the triggerguard (made from plastic) and take a look under the inner side of the triggerguard at the front action screw. There it`s normaly always broken and it`s necessary to make pillars in the stock and a metal pillar in the plastic triggerguart to prevent breaking.

The barrels are hammerforged from a special corrosion restitant steel sort with a very high strength and have a very high lifetime and good accuracy.

The locking lugs behind the magazine always make problems with high pressure. Then you need more force to open the bolt.

The "Steyr Schwenkmontage" (mounting system for scope) ist also not the best. But you can easy replace it with Weaver steel bases from Warne.

The plastic magazine always make problems when it gets used because the lips gets wider. Buy a new one and on the rear there are small srcews. Unscrew them and glue the plastic parts together with transparent 2K epoxy and thighten the screws. That give more stability.

The old steyr rifles with macrolon plastic magazine and triggerguard were discontiniued about 6 years ago. Their design was not the best. The new SBS action is better but nothing can beat the proven design of a customized Mauser 98, Win70, Rem700, Ruger 77, HOWA 1500 or Savage etc... with all it`s possible AfterMarket part possibilitys.
