Question, re Remington target scopes

now this may date me, but I am older than you so here goes.

back in 1967/8 as an active BR shooter and living in Rochester working for DuPont I spent a lot of time with the NBRSA folks - among them Mike Walker and Jim Stekle,

Mike had the idea of manufacturing a scope for BR in the Remington custom shop in Ilion got the equipment and made some - and asked me if I would consider moving from DuPont where I had been in marketing, to Remington (owned by DuPont) and heading up the marketing of the new Scope he had designed.

I spent time in Ilion, the custom shop, where the scopes were being made, and was willing to move if Dupont would allow me to transfer my years and benefits re 9+ years. the answer was no. I would have had to start from scratch and loose longevity.

Mike and Jim built some scopes, not sure any were sold if so few, I had one. the idea never evolved to the market to my knowledge.

Do any of you know of anyone who owns a Remington scope? other than Mike, Jim. have you seen one?

Bob, One for sale on GunBroker by I believe forum member SDWhirlwind. I remember a Precision Shooting article written quite a few years ago on the Remington BR scope. Will see if I can find that article.

PS: Bob, Some more info on Remington BR scopes. Looks like the PS article was in a 1994 issue.

Durn, can't get away with nuttin without being called on it JohnHenry!!! ;)

Some reports claim only 1100 were made, IIRC that PS article or another stated no more than 900? Supposedly the first 700ish were 20X and the remaining were a mix of 20X and 24X? Haven't found anyone alive that has a better answer than that. In fact it was you JH that sent me a copy of that article wasn't it? You're alright I don't care what the easterners say about you!!!!! ;)

The one I have is just clear as any Unertl etc I have looked through and the only 1 I have seen with a recoil spring and dot reticle. I had bought a 20X that seller claimed was in great shape. Upon arrival the lock rings on both ends were rusted with no finish left, anodizing on mounts was gone so it was a crappy gray oxidized aluminum color, reticle was frayed and basically useless. Butch Lambert had 3 at one time and IIRC only now has one that I believe Mike Walker converted to internal adjustment. Anyhow Butch gave me a name of a gent that repairs them..Joe Ruth in Lakeland, FL. I sent him the scope and he claimed it would be impossible to repair as is and ended up he was good enough to give me my money back ($375) plus shipping to him and he bought it for parts only. So I got lucky there. Seller was on 24hrcampfire, after bitching, moaning and lying he did offer to give me back money but shipping both ways was on me. I wrote him off as a dick I will never do business with again.

They are a neat scope, well built and a great piece of Rem history. Hate to sell mine but nobody around here and my family in particular know nothing about much of the 'stuff' I have acquired over 35+ yrs. :'(

Thanks John

that is a bit pricy for the going few sales I am aware of.

Well, how about this one? Better deal? It was at $1500 for about a year. You don't see many sell and real nice ones are few and far between. Last good one I seen sell on GB more than a yr ago was IIRC $800ish and was 20X.

I do have Mike Walker's personal internal adjustable scope as well as the prototype. Only 3 were made. Joe Ruth has one. I had 3 of the external adjustable scopes that I bought from Jim Stekl, but decided not to keep them as they mounted on the receiver and not the barrel.

This is the prototype.

You may notice they had the Tucker conversion before Cecil started doing it.

Bob, I think you will have a hard time finding one for less than $800. I sold my 3 in about an hour each and I didn't give them away. You might check Nick Stroebel's book on prices of old gunsights and scopes. My edition is over 10years old and if you look they are from $700-$1000 for the external adjustable scopes. The internal adjustable scopes could be worth??

Hi Dennis, Your memory is pretty good. I did send you a copy a few years ago. Those Easterners are just disturbed that some of that yankee was washed out of me while working 18 years in the Richmond, VA area. Regards, John
