Question on US Optics Foundation Design

Personally, I am fascinated by optical engineering design (even though I don't fully grasp it at all), and have always been curious as to the reasoning behind the unique objective bell design on the USO Foundation series. No other optic shares this design and I'm wondering if anyone knows how it came about? What benefits are gained by the extra length and compound angles?

It probably helps control chromatic and spherical aberration as well, by enabling the use of lenses that are not as strongly curved as a conventional objective. It may also reduce the cost to manufacture by aspherical lenses and/or ED glass to achieve acceptable lecels of distortion.
