Question on Rifle twist and rifling

What is th ebest kind of Rifling?

I shoot a 308 and a 6.5 x 284

My main question though is with the 308. I have a Savage 110 tactical it has 1-10 twist. I have heard tha it is better to use a 180 grain or larger in a 1-10 twist and to use a lighter round in a say 1-12 or 1-11 twist.

Is this true? Is there anything to back it up? It true was is a M24 a 11.5-1 twist? a lot of qustions I know but I am sure there are some of you out there with the answers.

It would be helpful to know what round your refering to.
Go to Shilen's web site, there is a great page there on rifling and twist rates. Should answer most of your questions.

The M24 is actually a 1n11.25'' twist . And you can shoot lighter bullets out of a fast twist you just can't shoot heavy bullets out of the slower twist .

Shooter's got it in a nut shell. Velocity plays a small role in this also. The faster the bullet the slower the twist you can get away with.
