Question on reamer order

I received a preliminary print via email for a 6MMAI build I have in the works. I specified all my wanted specs and all is good except for web diameter. On the print it says .472. I miked 10 pieces of my lot of new 6 MM Winchester headstamp brass and all are right at .464 on the web diameter. Whats a good clearance for the web diameter to spec out to Kiff? I was told .003 over the miked diameter? Suggestions or comments?

While we are on the subject what is the norm for chamber length? .010 over the trim to length? Or should I go a tad longer? This is a varmint hunting only rifle with 0 freebore ala Richard Franklin clone.

Hi Frank,,,,the suggestion to go .003" larger at the .200 line is correct,,,that will work perfectly with Redding type S dies,,,,when you FF your ctgs to AI them they will shrink ~.015" ,,,so I would spec the reamer ~.010 longer than your new brass,,,measure a cupla of them with a bullet seated and make the ND .003 larger and you will have a perfect NO turn chamber,,,,Roger

And don't forget that Lapua is coming out with 8mm Mauser brass, so you may want to make brass from that & the Lapua probably needs a little larger datum size as with most other calibers.

Joe,,,,thanks for the update,,,I didnt know abut the Lapua 8mm brass,,,,groovy,,,that will make lots of 6-6.5-7mm X57 variants,,,,,good news,,,,,and you are rite ,,,most Lapua brass is a cupla thou larger than its WW etc counter parts,,,,Roger

Thanks Roger! The gal from PT&G called me back late afternoon and I went with a .467 web diameter and a 2.230 chamber length based on the new 6MM brass measuring anywhere from 2.220 to 2.224 long. Blow length will be shorter and all should be good!

Frank,,,,,glad my input helped...Kiff is the best in the country at solving reamer problems,,,,Im glad you are dealing with him,,,,I fire form with Universal Clays and NO bullet,(no cream of wheat either ,,hahah),,, I use aprox 55-60% of a case full of Univ Clays and a 1/4 square of toilet paper rolled up like a cigarette and stuffed in on top of the powder to hold it in place,,,you may hav to increase the charge a lil,,,,try the first few with old ctg cases or culls to get it right for the good uns,,,,,there is no bbl wear and no bullets wasted ,,,,Roger

Just worked with Kiff and Kelly Cain on my .22-.284 reamer. They are fantastic to work with. I got a size die reamer for mine also. Good luck on your new build Frank!

Yes, Kelly is the gal I talked to on phone about my revisions! Super nice! Someone did tell me a few years back to call out there early around 6-7 west coast time if you want to talk to Dave. Tough to get ahold of him during the 9-5 hour bracket. Thanks again everyone!
