Question on a local competition?

There is a local rifle shoot coming up and here are the rules. Is something like this doable or is it similar to a "turkey shoot" where luck is just as much a factor as anything else? Shooting a 1/2 inch dot on the first shot at 200 yards off unknown bags and an unknown table sounds a bit challenging. I assume a cold shot. Bring your best rifle, sit down and shoot.

I'm not sure I can eat $30 worth of BBQ? :D

Entry Fee: $25 - $30 (Winner Take All) Lunch provided: BBQ (tip jar available)

200 yards, table and bags provided ( No bipods, tripods or adjustable rests allowed. Everybody shoots off the same equipment. Bring your best rifle! No restrictions! ( Borrow one if need be ) This is NOT a group or closest to center shoot. All that's required is to hit your “Dot”. Miss….and your out.

Round 1: 2 shots, 1.5” dot.

Round 2: 1 shot, 1” dot.

Round 3: 1 shot, 1” dot.

Round 4 and all rounds to follow: 1 shot, ½” dot until winner is determined.

Yes there's an element of luck involved but it's like Louis Pasteur's comment about chance favoring the prepared mind. Better equipment + Better Skills + Good 200 yard zero = Odds of hitting skewed in your favor.

I’ve shot plenty of the one to three shot “Do or Die” it’s actually pretty fun but usually takes a few runs to win a match...

You only get 5 shots on 4 targets at 200 yards. I think for those that get to the 1/2 inch dot it will be just plain luck on who the winner is.

Sounds like some guys threw some stuff together with no real competition shooting knowledge. Too many “shootin matches“ have handicaps built in that keep shooters away instead of drawing them in.

I bet you won't place if you don't shoot the match... Hell just go for the fun of it and give it your best. You may meet a new shooting buddy or find out some good info by talking to other shooters. I went to a steel plate match last year with a rifle I had just put a new scope on. I was off quite a bit on the first shot. I was able to tweek my zero while shooting the match. I ended up in the middle of the pack. But I had fun and I watched a gun smith shoot a rifle he had just finished building. Turned out he lives near by and I used him for some rifle work. He only missed one plate out of the 20 possible. he hit 4 out of the 5, 4" plates at 600 yards. during windy conditions.

So I say go and shoot it with the only intent being having some fun and possibly having some great BBQ.
