Question on 6.5x284

I have been hunting last few years with a 260 rem. model 7. I love the 260 and looking for more vel. Im currently shooting 50.0 grains of win. 760 100 grain nos. bt velocity 3000 fpc. How much vel. can i gain with the 100 grain bulet by building a 6.5x 284. This is only for hunting im very impressed by the deer i have killed with the 260. I dont currently have the vel. to shoot 3-500 yards. I have played with the 25's for years 250 ack and 257 whby.

a 6.5 x 284 will shoot a 140 grain 3000fps.
That 260 with the 100 grain nosler should kill a white tail deer size animal out to 400 plus yards.
Can your gun hold 1 moa or better accuracy at that range, or less than 5 inches at 500 yards?

Yes, i finally got it under 1" with some plaing around. I bought this gun used like new. I first of course worked trigger, bedded the stock. Found out why the guy sold it to me. With factory loads 2.5-3" group at 100 yards. Then to the loading bench and can shoot 1" sometimes slightly under. Also found out with the model 7 on third shot i let barrel cool a very short time to keep group. That pecil thin barrel can be tempermental when it gets hot and three shots will defenitly warm it up. I read every one shoots the larger bullets for the 284 i like the 100 gr. and high vel. which i feel is what kills. Is this the right move going to the 6.5x 284. My componets would be: Trued rem action, 22" hart ss barrel, McMillan stock bedded. I dont care to go over 22" due to this being a hunting rifle if i want to carry a 24" i have 2- 257 whby's. I am very impressed with the 260, i have killed 4 deer under 100 yards and they didnt move out of there tracks. I just felt this model 7 with the vel. i have is a 200 yard gun.

You didnt mention if the new build is on the current model 7 or another trued Remington. Is it a long or short action? I know the 284 Win was designed for a short action in the Model 88 and 100 but with case being necked down to 6.5mm it may be aproblem of feeding from the magazine. It will never fit the Model 7. A short action remington might be a trick also since even the hunting bullets of the 6.5mm are pretty long.
I looked at the same thing just a few weeks ago. I have a bunch of old take off barrels from some match rifles that would be great hunting guns if I set them back and cut them down. To feed from the mag witha Berger 140 or A Max. I would need a long action to feed from the Mag with my current reamer and stock set up.
Maybe some one here has had luck with a short action and will tell us how they did it. I thoght I would mention that in case you dont have a 6.5X284 case with you to examine.

You wont realize the optimum the 6.5x284 gives, if you choose to use the 22 inch barrel with one.. It won't be very efficient, and probably won't burn all the powder in that short of a barrel...
You can kill deer a looooong ways off with a 22 inch .260......

mike33,
Preacher is correct on both points. My LR partner shoots a 260 and he has started to experiment with Benchmark powder with his setup. Granted, he is using 130-140 class bullets and a 30" bbl., but he is getting 6.5x284 velocities! If you have a fast enough twist, a little heavier bullet will retain more energy at the longer ranges, and there are several good ones out there for hunting applications that will really put the "smackdown" on deer sized game. Also, you can do everything you are looking to do, with a lot less barrel wear with your current combination.
I hope his helps,
Lloyd

Thanks everyone for your replies. My 260 is rem. model 7 18 1/2" barrel i think 1:10 twist. Do you need the 26+" barrels to get the high vel out of the 6.5x 284? Playing with the 250 ack. imp we was getting 3300+ out of the rem classics opened up cutting barels to 20". Anyone have a load for the 260 100 gr.bullet, im currently shooting 50 grain of win. 760 100 gr.nbt.

BTW if i build it would be on another rem. action. I want to give this model 7 to my grandson to hunt with one day. Hoping to use a short action.

Here is another question. Just looking around what is the 6.5 panther? I seen clarence hammonds chambers for it.

You can't build a 6.5x284 on a Mod 7 action. You can't really build one worth having on a short action remington- even with a Wyatts box unless you want to stick with the short, fast bullets. The long high BC bullets can't be seated deep enough to fit in the magazine.

I also think you are wasting a lot of good components to build a 6.5x284 with a 22" barrel. If you want a little more velocity out of the rifle you have, find a take-off 700 barrel and add 2-3" to the 18 1/2 you have now and consider rechambering to an improved cartridge.

The 6.5x284 shines in long actions with at least a 26" barrel. All of the powder is burned way before 22" but that is not the point. There is still a lot of high pressure gas pushing on the back of the bullet at 22". If you need to shoot 300-500 yds, the length of the barrel should be the least of your concerns. Short barreled rifles are more suited to thick, tight country where their improved handling help. 500 yds shots are taken prone or from rests where you aren't in tight quarters.

I think you can shoot deer at 400 yds easily with the set up you have. I would use a little bigger bullet and let it do its job. If you want the blow-up instant kills you get from high velocity, you will have to come up with something different that your proposal.

At least this is how I see it.
