Question for you guys who use Devcon 10110 bedding compound.

You know that the $30 container of this stuff comes in a 1lb portion, and it sure ain't JB Weld cheap!! Can you guys tell me about how much of this bedding compound is normally required for a typical bedding job of a bolt action receiver?

I can weigh and mix any amount of resin and hardener I desire in the prescribed 9-1 ratio, and was wondering if say a half pound or less of the stuff would be enough? That way I can have enough left over to do at least one additional bedding job another day. But I DON'T want to be skimping and mix up too little of the stuff either, and then run short in the middle of a bedding job!

You should be able to do about 4-5 rifles with the 1lb. container if bedding the entire action and the first 1" of the barrel. just eyeball how much you think you need, can always mix more if you need it. leave in bedding for 48 hours before removing from stock.

Thanks for the input. I have a good Ohause gram scale and it is no problem for me to prepare 4 or 5 ounce portions of the stuff so I can get at least 3 bedding jobs out of it.

Yes, good idea about waiting at least 48 hours. I know I read something in their spec sheet on google where the company mentioned that the stuff takes 5 or 7 days (?) to fully harden! (I don't remember the exact number of days, but it struck me as a loooooong curing time)

I dont think you have to wait that long. You can actually pull the rifle after about 24hrs, but I like to wait 48hrs. Then trim and sand where needed, then maybe give it another 24 hrs of drying while separated from the barreled action before reassembling and shooting.

Great stuff! I bedded my 700 Rem LA with: 778.7 gr of resin and 96.2 gr of hardener. This would be the very least you would use. Gives an idea.

My rifle uses a clip so I had to do a lot of filling with clay. Pretty much covered the entire area plus the one inch forward under the barrel. I set the barrel assembly in place, taped it up, and wiped off the extra. There was NOT much residual devcon left. Mine stock was a skim bed, though, for what it worth. You may need more. I figured at that rate I could do 6-8 bed jobs, depends how much area needs to be filled. Good luck.

2 1/2 tbls of the Gray and 1 of the White will do a normal bedding job...
I never did weigh any of it........

Van,,,I usually use a total of 125-150 "grams" of bedding compound,,,,of course it all depends on how much you hog out the stock and bedding area,,,I like to drill odd angle holes in the side of the bedding area to help lock it all together,,,and rough up the entire area,,,,and a good pad under the first inch (cylindrical breech area ) of the bbl on a hunting rig,,,Roger

I bedded the rifle today. I started with mixing 120 grams of the stuff, and ended up with 48.5 grams of excess that I threw out. So then this particulart bedding job required 71.5 grams of compound that was actually applied onto the rifle. Being that there are 28.3495 grams to an ounce, next time I'll know to prepare about 85 grams or 3 ounces.

Yep, that one pound of Devcon can go a long way.......about 4 or 5 rifles....... certainly 3 bedding jobs at a minimum when allowing for a lot of waste.

Thanks for the help gents.

Sorry if im jumping in your thread, but im just curious how much more accuracy you guys got from bedding your rifles? I have 2 1lbs containers of Devcon. I bought it 4 months ago, but still havent had time to do the job. Im took some Vac days next week and thought about doing the job then. Thanks.

All bedding does is eliminate the possiblity of accuracy changes due to the action shifting in the stock. Not all guns with tight fitting stocks need bedding and it may not improve accuracy, but it surely cant hurt anything if done correctly. Think of it as cheap insurance to help accuracy stay put ;)

And while you are at it, you might as well go ahead and apply pillars too, because bedding without pillars may result in a bedding job that doesn't deliver its full potential. (emphasis on "may")

It's actually cheaper than JB weld when you put the numbers to it. Where did you get it for 30$?

My bad..... it was actually $32.99 + $5 shipping from ZoroTools.....not $30. You can find it for $30 but then they were charging $10-$12 for shipping.

Yes, $38 goes a long way when divided by 3, 4, or 5 rifle stocks. No complaints by me even if I only get to use it for one more stock before the stuff dries up. I was originally under the impression that guys were using the whole pre-mixed portion right out of the box as the manufacturer suggests. Two stocks at $19 -$20 each is fine with me. But one application at $38 - 40?......that would be a bit pricey.
