Question about Rem 700 bolt

I bought a plain 700 adl last fall on sale with plans to strip it down for the action to play with learning to barrel it. I just took it out of the box and put in the safe until last week, never fired it myself. Finally pulled it out and stripped it down and removed the factory barrel. Looking at the bolt nose, it looks like there is a crack around the inside lip near where one end of the extractor ends, near the ejector hole. I'm attaching pics. I haven't had a 700 in several years, but I don't see this as being designed to be there. Especially since it is weak and I can push on it with my fingernail and it extends slightly out over the boldface, rubbing the case head when I place a case in the bolt. Anyone seen this before?

That is a defect in the bolt. I would call Remington and explain the situation. They will ask you to ship the rifle back to them and they will replace the bolt under warranty. I have had to send in a couple of rifles over the years for warranty work and their customer service was great.

Travis, since you have already stripped the rifle down, you voided the warranty. From the looks of this bolt face, this was not a new gun-in which case i would simply determine the cartridge of the rifle that is soon to be built & order a new bolt with the proper bolt face dia. from P.T.&G. I have dropped a few 700 bolts in my shop mostly with no mishap but once a bolt hit a screw head & it looked almost identical to your bolt. (stuff happens) good luck on your build. good day Craig

Go with a PTG bolt and don't look back. Get the action trued while waiting on the bolt, it will then be a platform to build a world class rifle.

I want to accurize my 700bdl 22.250 this winter. One of the steps is to blueprint the action. Folks seem to suggest the bolt needs replacing - like a PTG.
Is that really necessary? What advantages? Could the PTG be added after the blueprinting to compare results?
I have good baseline 100yd data to measure improvements.

thanks in advance

If I were to guess the bolt was dropped and landed on its nose getting dinged. I can tell from the picture if the ding was pre or post bluing. If the sides of the ding are blued it would indicate the ding occurred during manufacture. Remington is really particular about their bolts and triggers requiring they be sent back for adjustment or replacement.
I can not hurt to send it back. They will send you a letter advising what they will or will not do. Either get it replaced or have them ship it back. If you get it back unrepaired and replace it with a PT&G aftermarket replacement bolt it will need to be fitted by a competent gunsmith. You might want to have the action checked for trueness before replacing the bolt as you may need to get an oversized bolt as a replacement.
Just my two cents worth.

Nat,
I hadn't thought about checking the finish, and when I did, it was definitely done before finishing, as the entire break line was finished just the same as the rest of the bolt. At least that will help imply that it came from the factory that way. Called Remington today and got the orders to ship it back. Someone mentioned that taking it apart voids the warranty, but it's very clear that it is voided only if the modifications resulted in the damage. Unfortunately I have to put it all back together just to have them change the bolt and reheadspace it if needed just to have me take the barrel back off and throw it away. This is my sacrifice action for just learning my way around chambering my own rifles before rebarreling my own target rifles. Thanks again

If your working the bolt over anyway, open up theface, bush it back to the desired diameter, and add a sako or mini16 extractor. LOTS cheaper than a PTG bolt and will serve you quite well!!!

So I sent the gun back to the factory. I was impressed with the turnaround. They received the gun on a Thursday and shipped it out on Monday. They replaced the bolt, and looks like made a few turns with a reamer by hand to adjust headspace, as I could tell they didn't disassemble the gun. But I'm happy with the service. Already have it indexed in to clean it up. Thanks to everyone for the help!

Looks like a perfect time to install a new Mini M16 extractor. Silver solder in the new ring Like John showed on another thread here and move forward.

just athought.

I had it happen to me in the same spot... Had a new Sako extractor installed and its still going stong many many rounds later.
