Question about Gluing in an action

Have a question on what is used to "glue" an action....is there a special adhesive or do you just NOT use a release agent when you bed the action? Your thoughts, suggestions and experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks

at a point in time in the 70's there were some experiments at Remington custom shop "gluing" the process was to epoxy bed the barrel or the action into a stock, when it was necessary or desirable to remove it, the gun was put into a freezer, the result is the metal contracted more than the stock and they came apart.

it was used bedding the barrel on a 40xbr I tried for Mike Walker at the Wapwalapin. pa match , I did not like it and it went back to the shop and was rebedded the next week.

I wrap the action with 1 layer of masking tape, put release agent (Kiwi neutral paste wax) on the tape, and "rough bed" the action with Devcon 10110. After the Devcon sets, I remove the tape from the action, clean/degrease the action and Devcon bedding with brake cleaner, and glue in the action with Acraglas or other thin epoxy.

For me, glue-ins are easier to do in two steps with a cleanup after the rough bedding, which produces a lot of squeeze-out.

A lot of people use plain old JB weld works great for glue ins. It remove action house hold iron on top of the action for a few minutes and it releases

Most short range guys I know use jb weld. Some pre bed with devcon. I prefer just one step with jb. Like tim said clothes iron about 20 minutes or so and you can remove from stock.

Devcon for the bedding, golf club shaft epoxy for the glue in. There was a write up by I think Jerry Stiller about this process with the reasons for using the golf club epoxy, sheer strength, ease of removing with low heat. It may still be on the Stiller website.

Thanks guys for all the information...here was my reason for asking about what to use for glueing an action. I acquired a Nesika ppc action that was glued into a baby tracker stock and screwed as well....it felt like the bolt was in a bind ever so slightly, so I did use an iron on top of the action and in about 25 minutes I was able to remove the action....the screws and the holes were all filled with bedding material, so I cleaned everything up and when I set the action back in it was evident that the screw holes in the stock were not exactly centered....I straightened out the holes and when I placed the action back into the stock and started tightening things back up noticed that when the back and middle screws were tight that there was a slight gap at the front of the action where it was not setting on the bedding material and when I would tighten that front screw to bring it into contact with the bedding, the bolt would bind just ever so slightly.....loosening the front screw would allow a smooth bolt operation. I obviously will have to re-bed to correct this and was trying to decide on glueing it back in as well....it currently does not utilize a recoil lug, so that is why I thought I would glue it and screw it back in....here is another question....would you guys incorporate a recoil lug or not? Sorry for the long winded story but I am going to barrel it in a 20ppc and don't know whether to just glue it and screw it or use a recoil lug and just bed it and screw it. Thanks again to all for your responses.

If it were me I'd clean it all up and, at the least, install pillars and bed the action to include a recoil lug. Done once, and done correctly (IMO), it's more easily disassembled for future maintenance using that technique.
