Query about cleaning barrels

Hi,

This may be a silly question, so I apologise in advance.

I have always used jags and patches for cleaning, but saw some advice about using bronze brushes, so purchased some from Sinclairs.

I applied some Hoppes to the brush and the first time I used it, it stuck in the barrel. Can someone give me some advice on where I am going wrong please,is there some preparation necessary)? The brush is .22 and the rifle .223 and I am using Dewey rod and a Stoney Point Bore Guide.

Thanks in anticipation
Gareth

Sounds like you reversed direction before the entire brush exited the barrel. I had this happen once. I believe that the bristles get wedged in the barrel. Try the same brush but go all the way through.

There may be the outside possibility that you got some brushes that were mislabled. A well fitting brush can rarely be pulled back throgh the bore once it has been started. Usually has to be pushed all the way through and then pulled back. New, quality bore brushes are always tight.

GarethMarijt: I've been using the Sinclair bronze brushes for years, and never had the problem of them "sticking" in the bore. First couple of passes thru a dirty bore, and they will be tight, but not enough to call for anything other than a little extra "push". Could they have mixed-up 6mm brushes w/ your package of 22's? Just measured the diameters of new Sinclair brushes: 22's are .237". 6mm are .254". So, generally about .011" to .013" larger than bore diameter. I push them straight thru, never try to reverse direction while they are in the bore. Interesting problem: let us know what you find.

Thanks for all your help. I'll measure them tonight and post back.

Deepwater: The brush only just got into the rifling before getting stuck and I couldn't get it any further.

It wasn't a question of a "dirty bore" either, as I had just given it a thorough cleaning with KG! and KG12

Just picked 5 brushes at random and they are .237", rather than .254.

Now realy puzzled. Should I try giving a brush a realy good dousing in something like Hoppes and see if that makes a difference?

If it wasn't a "dirty bore" issue and, you'd given it a thorough cleaning with some other bore cleaner, why were you brushing it anyway?

This will probably sound silly :-,,but I had just spent 4 hours shooting in freezing temperatures)...

I had just spent over an hour cleaning the rifle when I remembered I had a new rod and brushes which I hadn't tried yet. Since it was the last shoot of the year, I decided to give the rifle one extra last pass before oiling it and putting it away.

Did you exit the bore with one pass or did you push through part way and try to withdraw? I've never had a proper fitting brush get stuck in a bore.
