Quality of Norma 300 WSM brass

Bought 300 pieces of 300 WSM Norma brass and took 110 to use on a new barrel. Ten pieces would not fire had set bullets on a hard jam of 25th to get them to fire. It weights 8 to 10 grains less than brass I bought in 2015. Has anyone found problems with Norma 300 WSM brass ?

I have shot several hundred Norma .300WSM pieces with nary a problem. I just bought 1000 pieces of .270WSM, to be made into .300WSM. So far with 300 pieces made into .300WSM having been shot, ZERO problems with these either! T-Rust me, Norma makes excellent brass..

I bought 1000 pieces in 2012 got 12 to 15 firings on brass and primer pockets where still good. Like I said this 300 pieces weight was way lighter and the 10 pieces that did not fire first time where 7th shorter. That how I new to do a hard jam.

What do you need to do to get 270 wsm to work as 300 wsm Ben?

It is VERY simple! All you have to do is run a 7mm mandrel into the .270WSM brass. Then anneal the 7mm brass and run a 30 cal. mandrel into the 7mm brass and you have the .300 WSM>>>then turn off the dounut at the neck / shoulder junction>>>>perfect .300WSM brass! NOTE: I found the .270WSM brass AFTER COMPLETE PREPARATORY WORK is done on the brass, weighs "about" 6grains MORE than the .300WSM brass that came as .300WSM.. This means the case capacity is somewhat less. So I fireformed the .270 brass BEFORE I developed a load. Outside of that, it is everything the regular .300WSM brass is!

My process for prepping 270 WSM brass for a 300 WSM BR rifle from another thread:

The easiest way to neck these up is to just run them through my Forester FL die, then use the .308 Whidden expander ball in the Whidden die for a second pass. That keeps the necks straight and ready for turning.

I can't use only the Whidden FL die because it is tight on new brass, and that was at myrequest. My reamer is tight--only .5527 at the .200 line.

Then I turned the necks.

I am having Alex Wheeler build me a 300 wsm for hunting. I decided to have some RCC brass made for it. I’ll run her a little wild and see how they hold up.

How many firing can you get on .270 brass once its form to 300 WSM ? In 2012 I bought 1000 Norma 300 WSM I got 15 firings on primer pockets where still tight but was starting to separate in the middle. Have not had any sense then that lasted that many firings.

Well on the finished brass, I have only 2 firings. So I can not actually say. However, with my "normal" .300WSM brass I am on my second barrel with both rifles. I suspect that I will get 15+ firings on them. The Norma brass is very strong. When I had a 7 SAUM I used Norma brass. It lasted 3 barrels and I stopped with the SAUM>>>>However, the brass was still going strong!

I would pass on the Bertram. I am going to be getting some RCC brass in 300wsm next week. It’s pretty amazing how they make it. It’s machined not punched. They can use are harder allow this way. $4 a case. But if I can stomp on it and it holds up then it’s worth it. They can make it to any spec you want.

RCC is a cartridge company in Texas that makes any brass to any dimensions you want. Since they machine the brass, they can use a 272 alloy which is harder than standard brass. I am pretty excited about this build. Trying out new RCC brass and a Bartlien Carbon Fiber barrel. Bartlien does the process correctly. Contour.drill.wrap.contour.cut rifling.lap. Should be a great rifle.

Thanks for the details. No more compromising cartridge choice for brass quality. I’ll be watching for target pics.

I've shot through several lots of Norma .270 WSM brass in my .300 WSM F-Open rifle. Before any other prepping, I use Neco's case wall concentricity gauge, a variation of Creighton Audette's design, to cull any cases with more than .001" TIR. Commercial cases, like Winchester or Remington, lose ~50% on this test, alone. Some are wildly eccentric, i.e.: .008" or more. Lapua .284 Win and 6 BR brass lose 2-3 cases per hundred, but they are not far off. I have not culled a single Norma .270 WSM case in over one thousand sorted. YMMV
