Quality .22 Mag ammo?

I've tried 3 different .22 mag rifles, but have never been satisfied with the accuracy at 100 yds. The best one did 1" for 5 shots in good light and no wind. The ammo was Rem Premier. Next best was a different rifle with Super X Hollowpoints. For some reason the solid bullet didn't do as well. 1 1/2" and 2'' respectively. The 3rd rifle didn't shoot anything better than 2". I tried Rem Premier, Hornady, Federal, and Super X in all 3 rifles. All had good scopes and decent triggers.

Does anybody know if there is some other .22 mag ammo that is high quality and might shoot better?

Thanks, Tom

I'll be trying out some various ammo next week when my new CZ gets here. I have been looking at ammo in the mean time. The Hornaday 30 grainers look promising..

Thanks guys. I'll try the CCI Maxi Mag and Hornady 30gr, if I EVER get a chance to go to the range again! It's been unusually hectic around here for the last several months, and I'm way overdue. I'll post the results.

Meantime, do any of you know if the European rimfire ammo makers have .22 Mag? Eley, RWS, SK, etc. If they do, I haven't been able to find it. While I'm ordering ammo, if something else is available, I'll try it.

i only shoot an old marlin and use federal premium hollow points and it will do 10 shots in a .65 group..... it doesn't like the federal game shok
it also likes the remington poly pointed bullets.... about the same group size .70
i use it to shoot coyotes between the eyes......

CCIs 30g HP at 2200 fps
Fiocchi 40 gr SP & HP at 1950 fps
Hornady 30g vmax at 2200 fps
All the above shot right at .750" - 980" @ 100yds Calm day out of my Marlin 982VS.

So far my CZ 455 likes Winchester Supreme, 34 grainers.. They are flat wicked on P-dawgs.. I wasn't too impressed with CCI or Hornaday 30 grainers..

+1 on the winchester supreme as it shoots a half inch group from my MKII m77 heavy barrel in 22 mag.It shoots lights out at a hundred yards.I would try them and you will be very satisfied.

I finally got to the range a couple of days ago. I tried 5 different types of ammo in a friend's H & K Mod 300. I had shot this rifle several years ago and it would do about 1 moa at 100 yds.

This time the best it (or I) could do was about 1.5 moa with the CCI Super Mag + V. The bullet wt is not on the box, but it's a jacketed hollowpoint. Everything else was 2 to 4 moa, mostly vertical but 1.5 to 3 moa horizontal. Not even a "gathering". Those were Super X 40gr hollowpoints, Rem Premier 33gr Vmax, Hornady 30gr Vmax, and Armscor 40gr jacketed hollowpoints. I still have the Federal, Win Supreme, and Fiocchi to try when I get them. Whenever that happens, I'll post results.

This rifle has done better. I don't know what has changed, but it's got personal now. I don't believe that any of this ammo is that bad. I have had a couple of Marlins, a 9422M and a Model 61 that did better than this.

I think I'm going to watch for an Anschutz and rebarrel it with a Lilja barrel. There's still Ruger, Savage, and CZ also.

I also shot my Wby / Anschutz MK XXII. Very different story. Separate thread.

My AR15 did pretty good with CCI TMJ. The JHP did much worse. I shot the TMJ in a benchrest silhouette match where the chickens were at 75 meters, pigs at 122, turkeys at 144 and the rams were at 188 meters. I was clean until the rams where I dropped on to what was most likely a slightly weak round that hit about 6" low. I did had one failure to eject that I later realized was probably due to that weak round.

In that match the 22 mag has to shoot against the 17HMR's and that dropped ram cost me a high finish. After shooting the 22 lr in that match the extra pop of the 22 mag made me giggle !! The 3/8's scale silhouettes really get sent for a ride by the 22 mag. On the rams at 205 yds the 22 lr seems to barely knock them over, mostly seeming to slide them backwards and they fall off the back of the rail. The 22mag sends them flying. I have also shot this match with a 17 hm2. The hm2 knocks over everything but the rams. To take the rams down I have to hit them on the head. A body hit leaves them standing

When I did the ammo testing I didn't record anything. The TMJ shot decent groups and the JHP didn't. I pulled one of the TMJ bullets and sectioned it and it is jacketed and is a pretty good looking projectile.
