Q on resiseing

Hi all

Say you have two rifles that have the same chambers - different reamers, like a 6br 272 no turn.

You fl re-size the brass from both rifles, bottoming the shell holder on the die.

The brass fits one rifle but doesn't come close to chamber ing in the other rifle.

What to do?

thanks

Assuming (bad thing to do) that both casings are trimmed the same as well as all the other prep work being equal, I'd measure the base of the casings as it sounds like one of the chambers is tighter than the other, and that won't allow the casings to fully seat into the chamber. I ran into something similar (.002 difference between the chambers) and had to buy a small base die to tighten up the base of the casings and then the casings chambered into the tighter chamber just fine. If the measurements of the bases are the same, then I'd back off 1/4 turn on the die and try again. If that doesn't do it, screw the die in 1/4 turn and/or until you feel a slight cam over. I've not been a fan of resizing with the ram all the way making contact with the shell holder anyways unless necessary to get the resizing right. Just a consideration and my take on it.

Do you have fired brass from both rifles, and some sort of comparitor so that you can measure the shoulder to head length of both, and for that matter, your sized cases? Running your die down till it touches the shell holder as a normal sizing procedure, is not the best approach, especially if you want to maximize case life and accuracy. You may need a new tool or two. Chamber reamers vary, as do the headspaces and throat lengths of chambers. Bottom line, to get the best from your rifles, you will probably have to treat them as individuals.

Yes from shoulder to head measurement is the same. However the web area is a couple of thou larger. My bud has a Lyman #2 shell holder and it's about .020 shorter than my rcbs. That might do the trick ? Why would the shell holders measure so different? I would rather not treat them like women, but I will do what I gota do.

thanks guys

How old are the rifles? If you go back far enough, the chambers that were reamed for Remington brass, were not only smaller at the back, but they had a significantly shorter trim length. A friend ran into this, and eventually had the barrel rechambered to fit Lapua and Norma brass. What tool are you using to measure shoulder to head?

Added later, copied from an article on this site:

"What is the Correct OAL for the Case? New Lapua brass measures 1.556-1.557". SAAMI spec for the 6mm BR Norma case is 1.560". By contrast the OAL spec for 6mm BR Remington is 1.520". The Lapua brass is headstamped 6mm BR Norma-Lapua. We trim all our cases to 1.555" when any one reaches 1.560" or longer. "

Rifles are quite new. The one with the larger chamber is by Hart, reamer unknown and the tighter one is a Krift [sp] reamer. Measurement was from a block on the datum [sp] line to head. It looks like I will treat them separately because of the difference in reamers.

thanks again.

I doubt there is any industry standard for shellholders as it relates to the height. I have the same shellholders (#2 for example), made by the same company and even they vary.

Another reason why the die makers "advice" to adjust the full length sizer in whatever relation to the top of the shellholder is really poor advice. One size fits all and in many instances the brass is being oversized.

I keep brass dedicated for each chambering, even though they may be cut with the same reamer.

Were they my rifles I would segregate the brass. You will not get the best accuracy using interchangeable brass. At least that's been my experience.
The second thing I would do is send Lynwood Harrell fired brass from both rifles and get a custom die for each. Whatever the issue is, those two moves should take care of it.

I just started segregating brass on my two 30BRs because they have .003 different headspace. It's the gunsmith's fault because they were both chambered with the same reamer. Brass fired in the longer chamber will not chamber in the other gun until I bump the shoulder back a couple thou.

Having 2 different piles of brass is the answer from what I see.

One last thing, my Lyman # 2 is .020 shorter than my rcbs shell holder. This lets me neck size, bump and work my brass further if I want. One more thing for me to remember.

Who would a thought.

thanks again.

I think when you use the shorter holder to re-size the the case just above the base you will push the shoulder down also. I think a small base die would be the easiest. Where did you measure .020" difference? Later! Frank

When loading for different guns using the same die (but still recommend keeping brass separate for each gun!), I find it very convenient to use the Redding competition shell holder set. Each shell holder varies by several thousandths in height. This allows you to bump the shoulder in two (or more) measurements without having to readjust the die. I do this with two 6BR barrels, (both Krieger), both cut using the same reamer on the same day by the same bench-rest gunsmith. Nevertheless - one chamber was about .003" deeper, thus causing a problem to get both headspaced properly without constantly readjusting the dies or buying another dedicated die for each barrel. I do the same thing with various .223 AR's. Check them out at Sinclair.
