putting it together...

need to make up a parts list for odds and ends...

i am changing a 30. 06 to a 7 mm saum AI. i am buying a 7 wsm bolt head only to replace the 30.06 bolt head. should i change out any other parts while i am changing the head? i e...
-bolt head retaining pin
-ejector

- so on so forth?

will the previous recoil lug work? the barrel i have has a 1.350" outer diameter. so, i have to shoulder the barrel kinda like a Remington barrel, and not go the way of the barrel nut.

any other suggestions? thanks Brian

Brian:

I am assuming you are starting with a Savage factory action since you have a barrel nut. First the 30-06 only comes in LA models and the SAUM comes in SA rifles. You can build a SAUM on a long action. Second the standard caliber rifles come with a 1.0625 tendon. Third the SAUM calibers come with a 1.115 tendon diameter. You can build a SAUM one th smaller tendon. Forth, the SAUM come with a center feed CRF boltface. The SAUM come with a center feed box magazine. The non target model Savage rifles come with a stamped recoil lug. Truing the action, barrel nut, and adding a precision ground lug will make your rifle more accurate. You have several things to consider in this conversion.

yes its factory.

can i replace the push feed 30.06 bolt head with the controled round feed on the exsisting bolt, or are the bolts different also? if they are the same, is the firing pin hole the same size?

which part is refered to as the TENDON. i think i have a though on which it might be, but have never heard anything called this before.
thanks guys, very much, brian

Brian,
RS just slipped up during typing, it should have been TENON.
But you already new that didn't you ?

ALL of my 7mmsaum factory barrels mike out at 1.061 and all will screw right into any standard Remington receiver including the XP-100 actions.
The last 325WSM I built also had a 1.061 tenon and it screwed right up tight to a Remington SAUM action...........
So far I've not ran into any 1.115's on any I've seen.

okay, thought i knew what was being talked about, but now know i dont. which part is the TENON? please enlighten me. thank guys, brian

Preacher, I gather Brian is using a Savage? action and Rustystud is referring to the 2 different thread sizes for Savage?????? Am thinking because of mention of sandwiched recoil lug, etc you guys are talking apples/oranges but then again maybe I have grapes on my mind??????

i have to "sandwich" the recoil lug on the SAVAGE action because the barrel has to large of a diameter to have a barrel nut fit over it. so, i will be cutting a shoulder into the barrel right after the threads for the recoil lug to sit on, and i will use o lug locater tool to make sure its straight. just as if it were like a remington action. for the threads, i was just going to measure the ones off the old barrel. i belive that they are 1.055" x 16, 60 degree threads. brian
