Putting her to bed

Getting ready to bed my old faithful Rem.700 for the first time. would it be best to float barrel channel first before bedding or bed it like it is with barrel not floated then float barrel after bedding compound sets up?

I would float the barrel first. Otherwise if the barrel is touching any part of the stock prior to your bedding, it won't mess it up from barrel stress somewhere down the barrel channel.

The bedding should only take up a few thousands of an inch. You shouldn't see the difference in the finished product if there is any. That is, an asymmetrical look; high and low or from side to side. In construction we call that the “reveal”. Don't know what gunsmiths call it.

Kinda depends. Do you have pillars in the Remy? In this case you want full contact of action to pillars prior to bedding. No pillars? Assure the bore is parallel to the stock. You don't want the muzzle end higher than the chamber end. If you have excess bbl channel clearance, wrap bbl with tape to assure a level action. Or, remove just enough fore end material to level & bed properly. Once the bedding has cured "float" the bbl....... Not sure if action is contacting pillars? A few BB size balls of plumbers putty/silly putty near pillars and action properly torqued to stock, then check thickness of BB's.

Hog out the barrel channel first. Cut a short length of a 1" wood rod and wrap some 160 grit paper around it to sand the channel and open it up.

Also, once you've opened up the barrel channel, wrap the barrel towards the end on the stock wits masking tape. Keep wrapping until this 'doughnut' just fits inside the barrel channel. Now when you bed the action, the barrel will be centered in the stock.
